LED Dash Concept

Well it’s kind of a long story but I ended up buying this LED Dash Strip from a Website Called “LEDAllThings” Even Though I Do NOT Recommend buying anything from them as the service was very poor I finally got the LED Dash Strip And Mounted it in my Dash and it Works From a Transmitter Device That Runs On AA Batteries at Night it’s Blue it’s a 91 Camaro so the Dash is just a lil different from 89 and older I’m going to post Pics

Re: LED Dash Concept

Blue light under the windshield? Can you see it from outside the car at night? You'll get pulled over and either issued a fix-it ticket or citation for impersonating an emergency vehicle. Just an FYI, generally you don't want to invite The Man into your business.

Edit: This stuff hanging from your mirror, improper display of a front plate and obstructing your field of vision, will probably get tagged/mentioned/cited by the cop too while he's got you pulled over for the cool blue light. You might smell like alcohol, or marijuana, why don't you step out of the vehicle? Your passenger looks like maybe she's under 18, did you know there's a curfew after 10pm?

I'm really not trying to rag on you about your tastes, I'm just giving you the friendly heads up before Officer Friendly throws the book at you over something like a blue light, and before your passenger gets hauled downtown at 2am and has to call her parents to come pick her up. If I'm unfairly jumping to the conclusion that you're under the age of 25 yourself, nevermind.

Re: LED Dash Concept

Hmmm...doesn't that create a lot of glare on the glass at night?

Re: LED Dash Concept

To be honest it’s a lot of new cars that come from the factory like this the 5th gens and 6th gens have a similar ambient lighting package that came on the 2SS Models or the ZL1 Models they even change color so it’s really no difference

Re: LED Dash Concept

Yeah, they generally don't care... Until they do... Maybe they see one thing too many and snap. Idk, I'm just letting you know that while you can usually get away with no front plate, a cracked windshield, stuff hanging on the rearview mirror, illegal tint, non-DOT slicks, headlight/tail light covers, etc eventually that stuff has a habit of rising up and biting you square on the *** at the absolute worst possible time. While some of those things may be out of your control, or have specific purposes for being the way they are, sometimes something like a cool blue light just isn't worth the unintended consequences.

Re: LED Dash Concept

this looks terrible. are you just going to leave it laying on the dash like that???
you could at least try to cut a notch in the front edge of the dash pad and install the light in the notch. that might look better.

Re: LED Dash Concept

Looks like the sun already laid a few gashes in that dash, try sewing that light thread through all of them, that would be a work of art.... Red would be a more attractive color, mix them, red and blue together, I see you selling kits soon, you could make them right along side the licence plates yer stampin out....

It's not that "A lot of Negativity Happens On Here" I've learned the hard way it's a Technical Support and TRUE mod, upgrade, and historical board. If what you post is perceived as "stupid" you will be roasted. I've been there lol

It’s very unnecessary it’s sucks we are supposed to be a supportive community of 3rd gen owners it’s a shame we can’t even share are ideas and have positive energy and feedback from our fellow brothers I never see the Mopar guys doing that or the Mustang owners I’ve witnessed they mostly welcome each other regardless of builds I see why I don’t have many buddy’s that have Camaros Young or Old

Re: LED Dash Concept

That's not as bright as I had thought it would be. I've actually been watching some of that on eBay as a replacement for the failed string of incandescent lamps used inside a light box in a trim panel of my conversion van.

My wife's Buick has some of that (or some similar lighting technology) in the center console. But it's up under a piece of trim, so all you get is the indirect light glowing softly. You don't see the actual source of the light.

Personally, I'd have it up under the pad, so it shined down on the gauges, radio, etc. Or on the hush panels under the dash, so it illuminated the floor area. But to each his own.

Re: LED Dash Concept

Not trying to be negative. It’s a cool idea but the execution is severely lacking. The way it is now looks like an unfinished project. It’s like when someone builds a sweet engine and then leaves the wiring looking like a rats nest when they install it.
When you create a thread you need to be prepared for community feedback - both positive and negative.

Re: LED Dash Concept

Wanted to post this the other night, but was having a little trouble with Flickr. I'll add this, then leave the subject alone. When customizing, no right or wrong, but some ideas will be more popular than others.

This is a little overview of how Buick used this sort of soft blue light for both practical as well as purely visual effect. I agree with all of them, even the "soft, elegant" one, but I'm not buying into the "drama". I will point out that all of the light here is indirect. Even that accent line in the edge of the dash...you are not seeing the light source, but a reflection of it off of a surface.

Re: LED Dash Concept

Jeep has been using interior accent illumination for over a decade, except the across dash line. Just laying a light cord across the top of the dash, and woven through the vents, is straight back hills jacked up.
That's what gives a bad name to "custom", and third gens.

Re: LED Dash Concept

I wouldnt do this to my car, but if someone wanted me to do this to their 3d gen...There is a bit of a gap on the underside front edge where the pad/dash meet.Thats where i would have placed it, more work, but worth the results.

Re: LED Dash Concept

It's not so much negativity, as it is experience from those who have been there, and done that. I wired the kick panel lighting into my old Firebird so I could flip them from the dome light circuit, to come on with the dash lights and run with red alert lighting at night. Idk, it was more an exercise to see if I could, than anything else. The end result was somewhere on the scale between cool and corny. I generally did not reach down and flip the switch very often. It's not something I've missed since I sold the car.

Sometimes you have an idea, you go down that road, and find about a hundred reasons that you wish you hadn't done something, and when someone else posts about doing the same thing, the reaction is to save them the trouble of driving down the 'no outlet' street. It's nothing personal. Better to be mocked mercilessly by internet randoms, than to roll up to a cruise night or something and show off your cool color coded split loom and engine enameled masterpiece only to hear people snickering. If you're going to JCWhitney accessorize around a cracked dash pad, a thick skin be advised.
