This is my third (and hopefully final) post regarding my wiper motor issue. To sum up: I have a 1985 IROC-Z, when building it I removed the wipers with no intention of putting them back on. Now, five years later, I changed my mind and need to try and figure out how to wire them up.
When I removed the wipers, I took the plug, cut the end of and taped the wires up in the harness. With help from people on this forum, I got a wiring diagram and was able to track down the wires.
The problem I have now is, I have four wires of the correct color (pink, purple, gray and green) but I don't know where they go on the motor. My car has delay wipers, so that is the replacement motor I purchased. I'm not hooking up the washers, just the wipers and I'm hoping somebody can either check their car and tell me what color wire goes where, or the proper way to test the four wires and motor so I can hook them up correctly.
I posted a picture of my wiper motor and what connections it has, if someone can tell me what colors go where I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
That looks like the early 3rd gen/late 2nd gen wiper motor.I think Gm stopped using it by 83.My 84 had a different style, i would guess 85 would have the same. The wiring/colors vary between those different styles.Gm switch again around 88 FWIW.My 84 pictured w/ delay.
I've checked multiple places - Rock Auto, Napa, Advanced, Summit Racing (which is where I got my wiper motor) - and all only list one motor, this one. It is a Cardone 40-175; Napa lists a RAY49-175, Advance says CarQuest 40-175, etc.
Also, the cover came off of a used motor I bought from a pick & pull junk yard, the car was a 86 Camaro.
If it is the wrong motor, I don't have a way of figuring out what the right motor is. And if it is wrong, I assume I can still use it as long as I can figure out the wiring?
Well the one in your pic has 3 points to connect (8 wires). My 84 had two connectors.I believe it was 3 wires on the motor, (two on one port). Then i think it was four on the cover, i believe one was from the motor, seven wires tops.I dont think ive seen that style motor on a 3rd gen, but it could for a no/delay set-up.All the pre-88 set-ups had the washer pump on the motor.

It's the wrong motor,... at a minimum it's the wrong cover and that's enough to screw things up for you. if you want to KNOW what the correct Wiper Assembly looks like,... look at 841LE's picture above. That is the correct Wiper Assembly for 84-87 Camaro & Firebird. ( 84-86 Berlinetta Wiper is DIFFERENT ) . I don't know how to ID a Delay from a non-Delay Assembly by looking at it because they both look the same to me from the outside. There *might* be some markings somewhere that can help to ID a Delay from a n-n Delay, but I don't know what it is.
** Beware pulling any Wiper Cover off of a Wiper Assembly. The Wiper cover MUST be re-installed properly of the internal "Cam" or "Arm" that rotates inside the cover WILL break.
So good news/bad news: I got the electrical portion of the wipers figured out - I contacted ThirdGenRanch and they had the correct (used) motor. I got, installed it and plugged it right in (with the purchase of both motor connectors from Rock Auto). But now I have another problem.
Since I got rid of everything, I had to buy the linkage/transmission as well. I purchased a cheap one via eBay, and it said it was for 82-92 Camaro's - but if the motor was different, was the linkage different, too?
I'm asking because (1) I can't get the linkage to install correctly and (2) it appears that mine has a piece missing compared to some other photos I found on the internet.
The one I have has two studs that surround a cutout of sort on the end of the linkage that hooks to the motor. I assumed that the brass pieces went there and "clamped" the stud that is on the motor. But it looks like there should be another piece that bolts on there and extends the linkage further, is that correct? I found a rather crappy picture that I posted as a comparison. I'm not sure if I need to get entirely different linkage, or if I can just get the missing piece - and I have no idea what that piece is called or where I can get it.
