Can’t find burnt wire.

I installed an active subwoofer on my 86 Iroc. I hooked the positive wire for the sub into the fuse box where it says “ign”. One day I was driving and something went pop. Now those “ign” ports on the fuse box seem inactive and my gauges don’t work, except for the speedometer which is mechanical. The gauge lights come on but no gauges. Also the ding sound for if you leave the keys in or leave lights on is sounding constantly when I turn on the headlights. It makes driving at night annoying. I thought maybe the fusible links blew but there’s no evidence of them looking burnt. Could they possibly be burnt on the inside? Am I looking at the right thing? What exactly should I be looking for?

Re: Can’t find burnt wire.

Check your Gauges fuse.

That's not a particularly high-power source. Might want to either find something else to hook to, or use a relay with the coil fed off of that and the contacts fed straight from the batt.

Re: Can’t find burnt wire.

No fuses are blown. That leads me to believe it’s the wire that powers the fuse box from the ign switch. Any idea what that looks like.

It's pink.

Problem is probably not the wire. Probably the Gauges fuse. Just replace it.

Re: Can’t find burnt wire.

The problem is that there are 7 pink wires coming into the fuse box. It can’t be the gauge fuse alone because all the fuse ports around it are also inactive.

The side effects of whatever happened are that the guages dont work and the warning ding is on whenever I turn on the headlights.

Re: Can’t find burnt wire.

You need a service manual with proper diagrams. Ebay has a lot of them cheap. Anytime I get a year or model I don't have a manual for I immediately buy all the FSM's for the car so when things like this come up I can pull a diagram for it.

You can list the ports that have no power.

IF the Gages fuse is good (
verify it with a meter, not just visually) you might have a broken pink circuit.

You will have to trace it to the point where you find power.

That’s where the break is.

The circuit eventually makes it’s way to the ignition switch.

Happy Racing !
