buzzer sounds when I turn on the light and only stops when I turn off the lights

1987 camaro , the buzzer sounds when I turn on the light and only stops when I turn Just started , the buzzer is on as long as the lights are on , kind of a pain. I've been working on it quite a bit but can't connect to what I've done so I can't find the answer there. Any thoughts on this problem.

If you mean that it's buzzing with the lights on when the car is running , that usually means that the little contact in the ignition switch that determines whether there is a key present or not has failed , and is making the buzzer sound as if there is no key present . The normal mode of operation is that if the key is in the ignition and you turn on the lights , there is no buzzer . But if there is no key in the ignition and the lights are on the buzzer sounds to remind the driver to turn off the lights before leaving the car . The buzzer sounding with lights on and key present means that for whatever reason the buzzer module isn't detecting the key , worn contacts in the key present switch being the #1 suspect ....

Yes it buzzes when the engine is on and driving it. Won't stop till I turn off the lights.

The car thinks you have taken the key out of the ignition (as in, parked and got out of the car) and left the lights on.

There's a little set of weenie contacts in the steering column that are operated by the key. Yours are not operating correctly. Either they're worn, or just broken from old age, or perhaps someone just worked on your column and damaged it, or some such. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...high-beam.html #14 on the diagram in this thread.

I just found out more last night while driving, The buzzer Quit when the lights were on but I dialed back the dash lights by turning the Light switch **** . I just pulled some of my dash lights and put blue ones in. So I'm guessing the place to start would be by pulling the dash Meter panel again, any thoughts.

The buzzer should not buzz when the key is in. Period. Bulbs or no bulbs.

It's a problem with the little key switch thing.

This is supposed to be the way the headlight switch works.

You need to replace the Key Warning Buzzer Switch. The attachment should help.

Couldn't it be a bad audio alarm too ?

Sure, I suppose; it could be. Could even be the space aliens again, or Elvis' reincarnation, or evil spirits from the nearby ancient burial ground of mostly forgotten peoples, or any number of other things. Far be it from me to declare that it couldn't.

Makes the best sense though, to point him toward the VASTLY highest probability thing FIRST. Then, if no love can be found, AND ONLY THEN, move toward the FAR less likely other possibilities. Think of it as putting the message in my signature into practice. Especially since the buzzer can only buzz when it has power applied to it, and the only way it has power applied, is if the lights are on (puts batt on one side of it), and the contacts are touching (puts ground on the other side of it because the key isn't pushing them apart because the little plastic tip on them is worn or broken off from age or mishandling, or the whole thing has fallen apart in there and everything is touching the casting).

Lets see,......... a 2-minute check of the audio alarm; Or instructing the guy to dissect the top end of his steering column. He wasn't even sure how the system works - and your gonna send him inside the column on a guess ?? What would 95% of the people on this board try first ?? I guess HOPING that the bug is in the column is worth an afternoons labor.

Yup,... I agree that your sig pretty much sums up your last post here. You could at least have given him instructions on probing the wiring with a voltmeter before sending him blind to rip the guts from his column first. sofakingdom is right !

Audio alarm has 3 functions,...... one of them is not working properly.

Let's see: the buzzer is just going to buzz all on its own, because it's broke somehow? I know it's close to Halloween and all that; but really???

sofakingdom --- Exactly. Since you apparently don't know what your talking about please take note:

jbander; The Audio Alarm should sound the "alarm" under 3 different circumstances.... And yes; very weird things can happen when they short-out. You can get one cheap from most 80'-90's GMs that are Plug-&-Play and can be installed in about 2 minutes using 1 tool (a 7mm socket to drop the 'hush' panel ).

1: Key turned and driver door open
2: Headlights ON and no key
3: Should sound when the key is first turned for about 10 seconds as it illuminates the SEAT BELT light.

If any of these other functions are not working properly than the Audio alarm be responsible.

( For the record: Berlinetta Audio Alarms do not sound the alarm when the key is turned and the Headlights are on. I believe this was on purpose because of the "auto off" headlight system in the Berlinetta. )

If you find that you need to dissect your Steering Column you can rent the tool you'll need to do the work from most parts stores. ( pay for the tool up-front and get a refund when your done using it. Good Luck !

Re: buzzer sounds when I turn on the light and only stops when I turn off the lights

There seems to be such a edge on all my requests for help in car forums, it's either your dumb or a lot of shots, really not to help but to be funny I guess , I asked this same question in another group and got a half dozen comments telling me to start at the green wire, no its the blue wire, no start at the pink wire. I don't know the answer that's why I'm asking , it doesn't make me dumb or a target that, with along with you buddy's, to shoot around a lot of crap to be funny, it's not funny ever, it's sharp cutting ignorance. The worst place also has the best responses, that my friend is right here in this forum, why is this crap necessary.
Let me finish on a higher note. There's some ideas here that can be helpful , I'll try them and get back to you. Thanks.

Allow me to apologize to you JB,...... When I first posted I was honestly just tryin' to help; only to get belittled for my suggestion with snide comments about Elvis and Aliens.

Maybe this will help to trace the problem down; schematic is from an 85, but should be the same for your 87.
