Polarity reversed on dimmer switch, acts like a voltage regulator when trying to star

88 gta with digital dash. Car started killing ignition coils and or distributors. Replaced the engine wiring harness. Now the dinner switch brightens in the low position and dims in the hi position. Also, car won't crank unless it is in the lo position on the dimmer switch and I saw back and forth on the wheel. Replaced the ignition switch and that didn't solve any of the problems. Also checked all the power wires on the engine harness with my test light to see if it brightened or dimmed when I messed with the dimmer and it didn't. Anyone got any ideas what could be causing this?

sounds like the dimmer switch is worn out or the transistor is malfunctioning

Just figured it out. Started checking grounds and found a one not hooked up. It got lost in all the wiring.

Sounds like a great idea for an anti-theft device. Who would be able to figure THAT out...

Re: Polarity reversed on dimmer switch, acts like a voltage regulator when trying to

Desperate times call for desperate measures, lol. This car has sit for a year and a half or so over this whole killing ignition stuff. I dumped a heap of money into and with the help of zz17iroc on here we built a pretty nice car. Shortly after finishing it up this electrical crap happened I was so pissed that I pretty much walked away from the car and let it sit. Finally realized it was time to fix it or sell it on the cheap. Talked to zz today and he mentioned checking the black and clear connector by the ecm. Noticed the ground there had power with my test light. We had rechecked the engine harness and everything this past week.

Or adding grey hairs and taking years off my life. I was super upset and disappointed at the same time over this whole deal.
