Hatch motor works but starts smoking

1989 camaro rs 5.0 tbi 5 speed

when I bought the car a rat or something chewed through the wires that connect to the hatch , right near the driver rear of the trunk.
connected Wires to the best of my knowledge and replaced the broken guides and the pull down motor. When I shut the hatch it closes , when I release the hatch it makes a loud thunk sound like it was way too tight. Leaving the hatch open the motor begins to get hot. Is there a limit switch ? I’m assuming some wires are incorrect or faulty but because the hatch is working properly it seems to me there’s a limit switch that doesn’t know what to do. It closes (in my opinion) too tight as if it pulls down until it cannot pull any tighter, and when it opens its like it tried to keep working and smoking. Open to any criticism and what not I’ve read some wiring diagrams I’m not the best with them but do understand them. If someone could draw up a easier to read one or help me isolate my problem I’d be appreciative. Thank you

try to adjust the motor position for depth of hatch when it closes. Adjust it loose (high) and see if that solves the release issue, then adjust for best operation and fit.

so adjust the mounts or the motor itself? And when you say depth of hatch when it closes you mean the highest it will go and make contact?

the motor and slides were broken along with wires were chewed , I fixed the wires to the best of my knowledge and I replaced the motor and slides. I had to sand down my slides to make the motor actually slide up and down but
I can try and pull it apart and do this but I’m not sure if any of it will fix my problem. The only thing I see is that if it “continues to run” it’s a problem with the gear nut. So I can remove it all and make it “8 revolutions” and see what happens. Thank you
