1992 Z28 Rear Hatch stuck and light won't turn off/Battery drain

Hello,

I was experiencing issues related to the rear hatch closing but the light would not turn off. Battery would drain. This has been a problem for almost a year. I changed the stats about a year ago since they would not support the hatch. I then began to experience battery drain and issues with the hatch mechanism/light.

So when I would open the hatch (using the key or switch) the mechanism would stay in the down position. I would pull the fuse and then reinsert it and the mechanism would then raise to the up/highest position. Hatch would close but then the light would stay on. I DECIDED JUST TO PULL THE FUSE to prevent recurrent battery drain.

I finally found this YouTube video:

I loosened the 3 bolts and raised the whole mechanism up approx 1/4 inch. This solved the issue. Light turns off, I hear the click when the hatch is closed and the mechanism is in the down position. Hatch release and key interact work to raise the hatch and mechanism. Everything has been working fine for 3 weeks and the battery does not drain.

I am thinking when the hatch supports failed the weight of the hatch might have put some additional downward pressure on the mechanism/motor while shut. This could have pushed the entire mechanism/motor down due to the weight (Window, spoiler and louvers). The 3 bolts were not loose but also not tight.

Anyway I hope this helps someone that might be experiencing the same headache.
