Cant track wire

I have a melting wire in the a4 c100. I tracked it to the ignition switch and I replaced the switch, but it is still melting at the starter fusible link. I heard it goes to the gear selector switch but am not sure. If so how do I get to it?

Re: Cant track wire

I also heard it goes to the lid fuse, and power accessories breaker but they look fine

Re: Cant track wire

A4 is the main power distribution wire for all the ignition power circuits in the car, and some of the constant power too. It goes to a lot of things

Re: Cant track wire

Is this for a 1986 Sport Coupe?
Which engine does the car have?

Below is an image of the Power-Distribution for a 1986 SC with the LG4 Engine (8th digit of the VIN =H):

Once passing into the cabin via the C100 Bulk-head Electrical-Connector, a 10AWG Red Wire is under the Dash that divides into 4 Red Wires at Splice S200.

The four Red Wires go to:
-The 15A Lid Fuse.
-The 35A Power Acc Circuit-Braker.
-And two Wires go to the Ignition-Switch.

I will post a different Schematic if you have a different Engine.

Re: Cant track wire

In the Engine Compartment; from Terminal position A4 in the C100 Bulk-Head Electrical-Connector, the 10AWG Red Wire goes to Splice S102 and then to Fusible-Link B at the Starter-Motor Solenoid Terminal.

Splice S102 also has other wires that go to different locations depending on the Engine in your vehicle.
If you would like I can Post the Information when you reply with which Engine you have.

it is a 2.8l mpfi and I looked for a splice a while back and the wire goes directly to the ignition switch but if it goes out of the ignition switch which wires does it branch off to?

Re: Cant track wire

Here is the Schematic for a 1986 Sport Coupe with V6 Engine (8th digit of the VIN: S):

Once the Two Red Wires Enter the Ignition Switch; Power comes out in multiple places (just as shown in the schematic above).

If your concern is in regard to the Crank/ Starter Solenoid circuit...
A Yellow 10AWG Wire comes out of the Ignition-Switch and goes to Splice S223.
From Splice S223, the Yellow Wire goes into the Automatic Transmission Gear-Selector Switch (shown on right side of diagram above).

Then a Purple 10AWG Wire comes out of the Automatic Transmission Gear-Selector Switch and goes to Splice S104.
From Splice S104, the Purple Wire goes out to the Engine compartment through the C100 Bulk-Head Electrical-Connector at Terminal B4.
From Terminal B4, the Purple Wire goes to the Starter-Motor Solenoid (all shown in the image below, in the right side);

Re: Cant track wire

Any luck with following the Schematics for the V6 Engine Power-Distribution?

Re: Cant track wire

On a side note, where could I buy that book you have with those beautiful color-coded schematics? You can pm me so as not to derail the thread. Thanks!

Re: Cant track wire

You can always call Helm Inc and see if they have any "New Old Stock" Shop-Manuals/ Electrical Diagnosis Manual-Supplement.
These Manuals were always expensive...
you should see some of the invoices that the Dealerships would receive each year when they would have to buy 300 different Manuals at a time.
GM Manuals of all kinds have become quite scarce now... it sucks!

I was able to purchase a "Mint-Condition" 1987 Camaro Shop-Manual in 2001 or 2002 that was "New Old Stock"...
I believe I paid around $400 at the time for the Two Book-Set.

Helm Brothers, now Helm Inc has produced most of the Technician Shop-Manuals for us (GM) for a very long time.
Their Web-Site is: HELMINC.com
Their Phone-Number is: 800-782-4356

If they do not have anymore of the Manual that you are looking for...
Photo-Copied "Black and White" Manuals do end up on EBAY and/ or Amazon, from time to time.
I have purchased many Shop-Manuals this way...
Unfortunately the copies and images are never great; but it's better than nothing.
