Fuel gauge sender wiring from tank.

I own a carbed 1987 Camaro. I went to put a new “carb” fuel gauge sending unit in (2 wire) and when I removed the old sending unit from the tank it had a fuel pump(in-tank) sender (3 wire). Surprise, surprise! My question is, what is the best way to go from 2 wire fuel gauge sender to the 3 wire system? Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Fuel gauge sender wiring from tank.

Where you using the Electric Pump?

What do you have for the Primary Fuel Pump?

The 3rd Wire is Power for the Pump.
So you would simply be leaving that disconnected if the New Part does not use a Pump.

Re: Fuel gauge sender wiring from tank.

Thank you,

Apparently the car was originally FI and someone at some point converted it to mechanical fuel pump/carburetor. They just left the pump in the tank and never messed with it or the sender. The hose for the in-tank pump had disintegrated and it looked like the fuel filter had never been changed. I replaced the entire unit with a carburetor sending unit and did not realize it was originally a 3 wire when I ordered it. The fuel gauge was stuck on 1/4 tank and after removing the "pump" wire, it points straight down completely off the fuel gauge markings. I guess I will need to check the gauge itself next and make sure it is not faulty. On the bright side it runs much better with the new filter in place.

Re: Fuel gauge sender wiring from tank.

Just so you know 1987 Camaro Stock Carb. Engines had both an Electric and a Mechanical Fuel Pump (two Pumps).
It was part of those Carb. Engine RPOs.

In 1986 it was an LPO for a Vapor-Lock Band-Aid.
