1983 Z28 Fuel Gage

Hi,

My fuel gauge on my 1983 Z28 Camaro ( Mechanical Fuel Pump ) stop working suddenly. Gauge sits at top end of scale past the F. Did some research and I understand lowering the tank is a big job. I would like to make sure the sending unit for the Gauge is bad before I lower the tank. I have been looking for the connector for the sending unit at the tank but I don't see it. Could someone please point me in the right direction. I would like to disconnect the sending unit at the tank to ensure the wiring to the actual Gauge is working and confirm the resistance of the sending unit before lowering the tank. Any assistant would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Wire unplugged/cut/broken = gauge goes to F

Wire shorted to ground = gauge goes to E

Check the wire

Efff the resistance for the time being

Re: 1983 Z28 Fuel Gage

Thanks for the reply.

I understand with a mechanical fuel pump the sending unit has a single wire. I can't get to the top of the tank to get to the wire. The only wire bundle I see is for the tail lights. Is the wire for the sending unit also in that bundle ? I was original looking for a 3 wire connector from the tank that I saw on utube is mounted to the floor pan above the axle but I am guessing that's only if you have a electric fuel pump in the tank.

Any assistance you could provide on the color and where the wire is routed would be greatly appreciated. I saw one post indicate it should be a purple wire.
Thanks

I also have a '83 - on mine the wire at the gauges is pink. My gauge is also not working, currently replacing factory gauges with Autometer. I just bought the car about a month ago so still trying to figure out what the last owner did to it. I found two wires running from under the car behind the bumper on the driver side, not sure what else that would be except gas gauge. My car has an electric fuel pump and I found the wiring for that which previous owner ran along the fuel lines.

Thanks for all the replies.

I found the connector mounted to the frame rail. Mine also has a pink wire. When I ground the pink wire the gauge goes to empty like the above post above suggests. Guess this means the wire to the gauge is good. When I check the resistance across the connector tank side I get no reading. Looks like something must be wrong with the sending unit in the tank.

Can the fuel tank be removed with taking the exhaust a part ?

You'll have to drop the exhaust...
