Alternator die down

My alternator went out on my a few weeks ago, not fun cause it shut my computer off and my car ran like s***. so i went down had the alternator tested and it was crap so they gave me a new one. bolted her on and it seemed fine but it still has die down about as bad as the old alternator. im always going in the red whenever i come to a stop. can anyone explain why that is? the best i can ever get out of it cruising is 11, ive never seen it go higher on the gauge.

I'm sure you know this but, make sure all your contacts are clean & you've got a good battery-chassis ground & motor-chassis ground.

You may want to look into getting some new cables if that doesn't help. I replaced the ground on my 'bird with a new 4ga ground to the block & and an 8ga ground to the chassis to eleminate my problem since they were both in pretty bad shape (internal corrosion).

Did you disconnect your battery before hooking it up?....I bought a new alternator a couple of months ago and 2 days later it was already out . I replaced it with another one b/c it was under warranty and it is still working fine. Some are just peices of crap!

If you have a V-belt setup make sure the belt is good and tight. If it is a serpentine then put on a new belt after checking the other stuff. Good Luck!!

Don't forget, you should really charge your battery on a proper charger before (or at least soon after) installing a new alternator.
Alternators in cars aren't really meant to recharge a dead/dying batter - only maintain a proper charge while supporting the accessories. Putting a dying battery on a *** alternator overworks it, putting too much stress on the internals.
