Urgent: Car's service engine

It use to not be this often/bad, but it's happening a few times a day now....My check engine light will flicker on and off like some kinda short....which is what I was thinking it is..... but then it will come on and stay on and when it's on, my speedo reads 0mph but all the other gauges seem to be working properly, and my car starts sputtering...so I have to pull over, turn the car off the back on, and it's gone....Anyone know how I can find the solution to this?

Thank you for your help

Zach

Sounds like your VSS sensor is failing. I believe on the 91 your speedo is electronic. If so, you have a VSS sensor mounted on the transmission. Pull the connector off and see if it is corroded. If so clean with contact cleaner and put a little silicone dieelectric jelly on the plug. Also look at the gear(plastic), if is chewed up get a new one. Note color of gear, tooth count and any numbers. LOL, Danno

The vss sender is on the side of the transmission. If you remove the sensor there is a gear inside similar to a speedo gear. Sometimes they can get chewed up and will cause problems. I believe on your car the speedo is electronic so the vss will be where the speedometer cable went in older models like my 89. Hope this helps, Danno

I will get under and look at it this Sunday, thank you for the tip...Hopfully this can be it, and I can just fix it...lol...if that gear is stripped however, is it cheap to replace, and does the dealer have that part, or can u get it at like Autozone?

Zach, the VSS sender will be mounted on the drivers side of the box. It will be held in with a U shaped clamp with one bolt retaining it to the trans. It should have wires coming from it that go back to the ECM. I am doing this from memory, I am pretty sure that the VSS sender mounts exactly where the speedo cable mounts in my 89 with a cable driven speedo. It should be towards the REAR of the trans at the tailshaft. I just pulled my book and I was correct, look at the driveshaft at the rear of the trans, go back on the driver side and it should be the first thing you run into. On this side of the box it will be the ONLY thing with wires coming from it. I believe you told me it was an electronic speedo, I am pretty sure after 91 it was all electronic. Send me another thread if you need more help. Danno
