alternator?
alternator?
my car is constantly at around 11 or so. when i have my blinker on, i can see the voltimeter go up and down with the blinker. if i have my fan switch on it drops to about 8 volts or 10 seconds. any suggestions on problems? btw, i have new MSD gm coil and accell cap and rotor and it has not stopped doing this
you could pull the alternator apart and look for suspect peices, but most people would instead replace the entire alternator assembly with a "rebuilt" one from the local parts store.
if you elect to rebuild your own alternator, pay close attention to how worn the brushes are, whether the regulator is functioning properly, if the diodes are blown, or if the armature windings have shorted.
also look at the wiring going to the alternator. gm alternators need a hot with ignition switch on lead supplied to charge properly.

First thing is to forget dash guage. Get a decent DVM and check the voltage at the battery terminals when engine is running. As you rev the engine it should vary between 13-15 volts. If not suspect the alt. It is not unusual for the TG's with all acessories on and at idle to run low charge current, especially if you have a 105 amp alt.. One thing almost everybody forgets to do is to start with a fully charged battery. Trickle charge the batt. and then run your tests. An alternator is NOT a battery charger. If you are sure batt is OK then most likely the problem is the alt.
