firebird speedo sensor

Did my trans swap and the electrical pins for the speedo sensor fell out rendering it useless. Does anyone have one lying around they can part with for an 88 700r4? Thanx.

Re: firebird speedo sensor

What are your rear gears ( or do you know wha teh speedo gears are ?? )

There are 2 variations of the electric VSS's for an 84-89 automatic. The applicable Speedo Driven gear tooth count is stamped into the VSS as shown below:

I don't know the ratio. My housing is scored up and I can't read the tooth count stamp.

Re: firebird speedo sensor

Honestly, I don't know..The trans shop pulled it and showed it to me. If I can get the one for the smaller gears I can turn it 180 to get it to work?

Re: firebird speedo sensor

FYI:

My 88 GTA 350 auto has 3.27's and uses a 40-45 tooth VSS.

The only other factory option for that car was a 2.77 (9-Bolt ). That rear will require a DIFFERENT sending unit to accommodate the brown 39-tooth speedo gear.

Check your RPO codes for the "GU?" code to BE SURE of your gear ratio.

( If you've got a 10 bolt then the rear was swapped and all bets are off ! )

+1; Electric speedo gears and analog speedo gears are not the same.

Re: firebird speedo sensor

I was told that corvettes of the same year used the same sensor. So, I did a search for that. I found this sensor. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1984-1990-CORVETTE-VEHICLE-SPEED-SENSOR-VSS-25007308-/111340288333?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item19ec65f94d&vxp=mtr. Doesn't look the same, but will it work?
