1987 Z28 305 LG4 Engine Parts

I am looking for two accessory support brackets - the alternator adjusting support bracket:

next is the power steering pump rear support bracket:

These bracket are used on 1986-1988 LG4 and LB9 engines with the alternator mounted high on the passenger side and the power steering pump mounted low on the drivers side using 4 fan belts. I don't thing the serpentine belt system will work. contact Ed Hall - ephalliii@hotmail.com

Up to 87, 88-up were serpentine. The alternator bracket on TPI cars is different since it bolts to the runners instead of the intake. You'll want to verify if your car has the old SI style alternator or the 87-up CS style. If it's CS, the alternator bracket is 87 specific.

Edit: The GM parts catalog is lacking on 87 specific info, but if you go to the generator list in the part numbers book it shows the 87 alternators are 87 specific. The CS is physically smaller than the SI, the width between the bolts in narrower on the CS, requiring a specific bracket. The 87 brackets aren't even listed in the 82 book, probably because they were already discontinued.

Wow, I did not know this. I thought they were all 105 amp alternators. Just so you know, my alternator uses a wide belt [Like a serpentine belt] . The air pump uses a narow belt as does the A/c Compressor and the Power Steering pump. Got some research to do.

Yep, sometime in 85 they started switching to the multigroove belt on the waterpump and alternator with regular V-belts on the A/C and power steering. In 87 they went to the CS alternator. So in theory 85, 86, and 87 can all have different setups, then in 88 they went serpentine, and 89 they redesigned all the support brackets for the serpentine accessories. So in a way, they changed every year from 85-89.

I'll look over my engine that I'm taking out. I have an LB9 & I won't be keeping the ACC. Setup. Let me look it over before I go to work tomorrow night.

The piece I am looking for is on the back of the power steering pump, not the A/C. The A/C diagram shows a better picture of the missing bracket. Thanks any way. Ed

So I did some digging around the web. So from what I found [if you believe the internet] the 85 amp uses a v-belt, the 100 amp uses a 6 ribbed belt, the 105 uses a 5 ribbed belt. I have the 105 amp alternator. The alternator has a parts sticker that didn't cross to anything, go figure.

I PM'd FireBirdDude. Now we wait. I am in no hurry. I need to make sure it's a 1987 LG4 Set up, otherwise it doesn't fit. Don't ask me how I know this, it was a inexpensive lesson. Ed Hall

So I have researching the 1985 LB9 Motor and from what I see the Alternator bracket looks the same as the 87 LG4 set up. So if you get bored and can spare some time, could you take a couple of pictures of your setup? Especially the mounting points on the engine? That will answer any questions. Thanks in advance, Ed Hall

Re: 1987 Z28 305 LG4 Engine Parts

LB9 is TPI. LG4 is carbed. TPI cars have the top bolt of the bracket slipped over a stud into the runners. Carbed cars have the bolt into the intake. I.e. they aren't the same.

TPI - note vertical flange.

carb - note horizontal. **** example from Google, but should give you the idea.

Bad example since the second pic is a cluster**** of ******* engineering, and none of the above is really applicable, but should illustrate why TPI cars use a different bracket due to the top/rear anchor point.

That's why I asked for a picture of the mounting points. From the pictures I saw, I couldn't tell what the attachment points looked like. And Thanks for the information, I will keep looking. Ed Hall
