406 advice...

I have a 92 RS with the 305 that has pretty much been sitting for the longest..I have finally decided to do something with it.
Ive thought about doing an LT-1 swap but I dunno...sounds like a PITA..I have a 406 block I kinda want to tinker with..Would it be possible to put TPI on it..I really want it to be fuel injected unless it will be too costly or troublesome..Any advice or opinions will be greatly appreciated.

TPI in stock form is going to severely choke a 406. Miniram is a good way to solve that. Figure on PROM work.

"Expensive" is a relative term, I guess. Too expensive for me, but maybe not for you.

IN my opinion I think a carb is pretty much the only way to go for a HOT 406..those are serious engines man..I think you need one.

A 406 with a LT1 intake or a Stealth Ram could be interesting.

Unless im mistaken, and i may be, but a 406 is just a 400 block with a 0.03" over bore. Anyone can correct me if im wrong.

I love my carbed 400. It is mildly built and is essentially same as when i was still street driving it. It has an old set of ported, etc 461 heads from a 66 L79 327 motor, 10.4:1 comp, solid cam, Demon carb and a few other basic stuff on it. This thing is still pulling hard through traps at 7k rpm. You'll definately like the torque it puts out.
Cost wise, it's relatively cheap too build since so many are doing them. Use a set of 350 rods on it as this will give you a bit more torque. Pistons will cost the same with the 5.7" rods as the 5.565" 400 rods. I ran mine on Sunoco 94 octane fuel when I was still street driving it with no problems, although it now gets a steady diet of VP C12 race gas. Once I get a couple bugs worked out of it the et's will be better but so far it has gone a best of 11.34 @ 118.22 mph with a best short time of 1.500.

461 heads..

Do those have the steam holes in em or did you have em drilled?
Thanks for all the replies you guys...Theyre helping me come to a decision..

No, you're absolutely right.

I'd also suggest a carb, but I think everything ought to be carb'd, so I'm biased.

I think that attitude mostly comes from my basic lack of experience with EFI in general and with custom EFI in particular, but if you're in the same boat as I am, I'd recommend the carb even more.

Yes, you do have to drill out the steam holes in those heads. Although if I had to have the heads done today it would be cheaper to by a set of Air Flow Research 195 heads and have them angle millled to get the combustion chamber down to 67cc. I just happened to still have these heads on hand and had reworked them a bunch in the 80's.

Well

Im considering buying some Dart II Sportsmans for it.
I think they have the holes(or at least I hope they do) Im somewhat limited on the ammount of money I can spend since Im about to quit my job and go to school for Auto body repair.
I at least wanna get a good start on the motor.

After some thinking...I think when I bought the block he said it was a 408...So that being the case..cooling will be SUPER important...

geesh.. i dont visit this place in a month and im missing out on so much. hey andy thanks for the plug in :hail: my 406 honstly looks like the stock 305 that came in my 86 iroc. i have the orignial TPI setup *well..the look of it* but i have a 58mm t.b., TPIS bigmouth *ported*, TPIS large tube runners *ported*, and the stock plenum *ported* it flowed/flows well over 1000 cfm so air is not an issue *its fuel* they are AFR 195 heads *ported/polished/valvejob, ect..* the only thing is my injectors are killing me. normally 26 lb injectors around 50-52 psi is more then enough fuel. well mine is severly lean. so im going to buy some SVO 30's which is kinda overkill *28 lb injectors is fine if u dont want to add any power adders* but in a year im going to add a 8-10 psi ati procharger.

just FYI if u are going for high hp/tq #'s.. its expensive. specially if u havent had anything else dont ot ur car *ie suspension, tranny, rear end, ect..* i did majority of the stuff before installing the engine so i knewthe car would be safe. right now i prob have about 23-25k into the car. and honestly the only thing killing me *besides injectors* is rims/tires. but i want 2500 rims and 1000 tires.. so its going to be a while till i get those.

my email is falcon978@aol.com email me if u need anything. im sure i still have cam specs and other info on the engine if u need it.

btw.. cooling is simple.. yet $$

griffan alum nascar radiator *500-600*
alum waterpump *100'ish*
1 big *** fan *$100'ish*

i live in phoenix az.. yea the 120 in the summer time state. so cooling for me may not be as crutial for u.. but i can run the snot out of the engine for over an hour.. and it doesnt get about 140 degreess. normal driving/traffic it stays around 120-130 .

do u suscribe to chevy high performance? if so they did like 10 engine build-ups a few months ago. and there was 1 awesome 406 in there *carbed*. if u dont have it ill find it and either scan/type u the specs on it. but the #'s were up there.

my car right now looks like traler trash cause i just got into an accident. it was viper red. but not it has a primer black hood, orange fender, and the red body. the car is fine.. just bent an axle in the back. i think i may have bent the frame some because the hood/rear window dont close the same anymore. but i cant find where the bend is at *damn my 4k in suspension mods.. now i cant find where its messed up* fortunatly its not bad.. it just pulls to the left alittle *nothing a little spring cutting cant fix* but a new hood *iroc daytona hood* is comming soon and the paintjob should be here around the new year .

Az..

If you dont mind Id like to see those specs...Well mines is a Ford purple right now but soon it will be primered down then painted this fall a dark blue...cops are hell on the purple..pull me over all the damn time(when I was driving it that is) As far as the TH350...I cant pick one up and get it built to handle the motor for far less than the 700r4...I will drive it on the street but I have a daily driver(88 grand prix aka The *****)and I drive my Girlfriends car(95 v6 camaro) so I will be ok I hope...Just in case I want to ponder it..what do you have done to your tranny...and I am kinda worried about the rear...I will go look at the one I have at the shop and get the specifics so somebody can tell me about it...

id love to tell u whats all done on the tranny.. but i have no clue.. there is a shop here in AZ that does work on only 82-02 f-bodies. and they know there ****. but for like $1000 he makes it where the 700r4 can handle anything u dish out. this is also the same place that has done everything to the car *lol im more of a moblie business card for him * when i get home.. well more when i get home.. and after i wake up &*around 2 pm* ill get those stats to you. im here at work for another 90 mins *time isnt flying damn it * u may want to look at *which i wish i did* is see how much more it would cost to make sbc 427. well how much more can u spend. they are just awesome engine. but they are very $$ to make. *my engine cost me $10k'sh *including labor* and the 427 would have been more like 13-15k'ish. i have a 10 bolt in my car right now.. again.. he did some major work to it and said it can handle the power now.. but if i add my supercharger he would suggest a 12 bolt or 9 bolt.

Good deal

Thanks a lot man...Im just doing a lil at a time since its easier for me(an my girlfriend) that way. Yeah the 427sb is pricey...Im pretty much gonna build mine like a buddy of mine built for his nova a while back..it went 11.88 in the 1/4..not sure about speed and all that, but it had very little after market parts on it...I am going to use more aftermarket parts on mine. I hope I dont drive myself nuts with all the thinking I am doing on this.

well dont loose sleep over this. i finally got soem decent "im saying this loosely" rubber on the back tires so once the new injectors go in im going to run it at the track. but i know its good for high 11's.

Cooling

I never had any trouble with my 400 getting hot on street even during the summer months. If anything, it ran too cool. I used the stock V8 radiator with a Wieind aluminum water pump and a gutted out stock t-stat. I already had the lower air deflector under the rad support on it before this. On 65* and cooler days it was always 155* and on hot summer days it never got over 170*. Total money invested was just the cost of the alum water pump ($125) and a used radiator($20).

news...

Ok I just found out that the block is .40 0ver instead of .30..so that would make it? 408 maybe? And about the rear...The guy told me its a Corporate 8/5 10 bolt...anyone that knows anything about me..let me know=) And I hope I dont make anyone mad by asking rear end questions on a motor swap board but I already have people helping me and they may not be of help if they dont know where Im posting so forgive me...
Im probably ordering pistons and 5.7 rods friday so I can get this project in motion..
