How far can I get for $4000?

I want to swap my 305 TBI for the 350 HO TBI crate motor. Last I heard, it was about 2000 bucks for that, plus i needed a few extra things. I have to pay to get it installed, cuz I don't want to deal with doing it myself, and i dont have time. Would 4000 bucks cover me for everything? If not, how much would?

Thanks

\Dave

I dont think 4000 bucks is going to cover it especially if you arent installing it yourself. I wouls say your looking around atleast 5,000 depending on if you can get a mechanic to give you a good deal. As for how much you can get a motor for that all depends on how much stuff you want on it and how much Horsepower your looking for. Its too bad but HP means money. Good luck man

Red, how much research have you done into a shop to do it? I personally don't know of any shop in the area that would take it on, for a couple of reasons: 1) Not an "emissions-certified" replacement engine, so dealers and typical repair shops won't do it; 2) The little "issues" that will come up are beyond the tolerance level of most guys on the clock.

If I had the room, I'd offer to do it for you. Also don't want to eat into my Bandimere time, if you know what I mean...

Now that I think about it, I did talk to a guy out at Bandimere last weekend who said he and his dad are opening up a shop that will specialize in maintenance work and engine replacements. I'm not sure how much I'd trust them, based on me telling him things he needs to do to his Camaro that he didn't know, but when they open (not sure when or where that will be), that may be an option. He's looking to put a stroked LT1 shortblock into his Camaro (after I convinced him rebuilding the 305 was a bad idea), and needs to get it past emissions, so they may learn something on their own project.

Ok, one of my co-workers works at a mechanic school, and he said theyd most likely take it as a project. He said they never **** it up, and it would cost next to nothing. I know the 350 HO wont pass emissions, so what other options do i have? Its hard to pass up 330 hp, especially when those motors cost the same amount of cash. I hate hate HATE my 305, and I am going to get something else, but i dont know what, and i dont want to spend more than 6000, any ideas?

Thanks
Dave

man 6000 dooolllaaarrssss! i wish i had that much. Im restricted to under 2 g's. if i had that much i wouldnt be charcoal black wiht oil from doing my own swap. J/K I also hate my oil leaking and burning 305. If its not your daily driver than i say try and do it yourself. very informative, and dare i say it, kinda fun. Still be nice to get instant gratification, though

Yea, Id really rather do it myself, but the fact is, Ican't. Maybe one day when I have some time and I buy my classic car to restore, I'll learn, but for now, Im tired of getting made fun of with my ***** V8. I want a set of ***** on my car, and the 350 HO seems to be the best out there. My friend said that it can be made emissions legal with one hose or something, but he said it could be done. Hell, if everything goes as planned, I might throw in my 3.73's too.... Then itd be fast.....im sick of these *******s running around here with their stock wrx's. Ill show them.

yeah but he cant do his own swap so that really limits him as to what he can get.

I am thinking of doing a swap also and see NJ Speeder chimed in on TBI. I think TBI can work BUT since there is no clear cut and easy way to burn chips (since it seems no one will answer questions on the PROM board) and there is no step by step instruction on this subject Carb is easier. Just had to say this.
