I know this is not F-body, but my dad needs help...
.....ok, my father has been having problems with his Caddy, its a 91 Cadillac Deville with a transverse-mounted 4.9L V8. I am just curious if anyone knows a website where i can obain detailed engine diagrams of specific engines....drawings more or less, which shows and labels parts of the motor. The haynes manual for that car is not detailed enough. I would need something along the lines of what the dealers have in their computer databases. I know i have seen diagrams of this kind on this message board before. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have one of those, my wife's land barge. I have a Haynes or Chilton's or something, with schematics, but they'r ehuge and impractical to deal with. What is it you need to know? Maybe it's something I've already fought with...

"Land Barge" LOLOL...yea...its big...but those 4.9's are torquey. Anyways, my father has been having some sort of problem with a possible belt being loose, and also he didnt go through emissions in NJ with it. He told me they told him that the emissions comming out of the car were 3 times higher than acceptable levels. So maybe the smog pump is out, but also, he has siad that at times, the power isnt what it usually is....so i am thinking 02 sensor, or something else. The plugs have been changed, and i am not sure, but maybe the wires, cap and rotor as well. The car has about 65,000 miles on it. I dont know what it could be...but i would like to help him if i can before he takes it somewhere and ends up paying more than what its worth, and they dont do a good job. He just had it in for servicing the air conditioning system, and they loosened a spark plug on the block....it was so loose, he could turn it with his hand...and he had previously changed those-he would never have left it like that. thanks for your help.

Spark plugs come loose in those motors by themselves, the first time I changed my wife's at least 7 were loose, 2 of them hand-loose. Don't blame the A/C people. Tightening them should be regular maintenance.
It probably needs a cat. That's about the only thing that will make the emissions that high, if the Check Engine light isn't on. They're ordinarily quite clean.
Most likely it has at least one bad injector. The ones that come in those are pure crap, they're the same ones in 305 TPI cars. Do what I did when we got sick of ours running like hammered dog plop all the time because 2 of them didn't work: get a set of used stock Mustang injectors (I paid $30 to someone at www.corral.net who was upgrading theirs) and have them cleaned and flow-matched at www.cruzinperformance.com You won't believe the difference, and for less than $150 total you'll get what feels like about 40 more HP with no gas mileage penalty.
Replace the belt and the tensioner, but being loose isn't causing an emissions issue.
Things to watch for over the long term: loose bolts holding the timing cover on, which makes it exchange water and oil and leave giant puddles everywhere it goes; and main bearings. For some reason they're hard on them. I knew a GM tech who had one, he just replaced his mains (it's about a half-hour job, on a rack) every 50,000 miles, or whenever he just had extra time on his hands at work.
Those cars can scream, my wife's will beat a Monte SS. And it has over 200,000 miles on it.

RB83...
I really appreciate all the insights and help you have provided to me. You really explained alot and were really thourough, and I really appreciate that you took the time to give me some ideas as to what to look for in that car. I am going to pass this information along to my father, and hopefully we can go from there. I was thinking about the 02 sensor also...should we check them? How many of them are there on that car? Thanks again for your help.

Car: 1984 Trans Am WS6
Transmission: 700r4 Highly Modified
I'm trying to figure out why your Vette runs a 13.5 @104.4? My 1984 Trans Am with a mildly modified 5.0 runs 13.4 @ 108.6 witha 1.9 60 ft. Is your transmission working correctly? You seem to be slow about 6 tenths of a second. Just curious.

Its my first manual car, and racing manual vs. auto is difficult. My slip is as follows: R/T-.690 My 60' Time was 2.231 seconds. the 1/8th mark was in 8.891 seconds @ 82.23mph. the 1000 foot mark was 11.441, and the 1/4th was 13.583 @.....ohhhh crap....i read off the wrong slip when i first did my profile....its 13.583@103.89MPH...I am going to correct that in my profile. The transmission is fine though....its the driver that needs to work on shifting better.
The car should actually be running low low 13's. 13.0-13.2. It is acheviable with this car, but again, it depends on the driver. I was told that my C5 can even dip into the high 12's bone stock by friends of mine who race all the time...that is, if i do everything perfectly. I obviously need to work on it though....
