89 v-6 to 84 305
89 v-6 to 84 305
Ok, here goes.......I have a 89 RS with the 2.8 5speed.I also have a 84 z28 with the lg4 automatic,If i was to swap the 305 into the 89 will everything work(motor, tranny, ect)I will be swapping to a automatic. The reason i am parting out the 84 is that it needs too much work(rear, has some rust)so ,if ya know of any snags i might run into please let me know.and between the 2 cars i spent a total of $200.So,i don't wanna buy another v-8 car

Do you have emissions concerns? If so, no carbed engine will do in an '89.
Otherwise, you'll need everything that hooks onto or feeds that 305 off of the '84 and put into the '89. You may have other compatibility issues due to the differences in years between the two cars.
At least having a complete, running donor car is a step in the right direction.

Yes, the fuel is definately something you will have to upgrade also. If I remember correctly the v-8 came with larger fuel lines and pumps, since they needed it. You can probably keep the stock one, you will just have to pull it from the original and put it in the new one... And since you will have the 305 out of the car, just go ahead and swap on some headers, a new intake, carb, and cam while you're at it. You can get that Performer package from Edelbrock for around $800 (w/out the heads obviously) and that will definately add some SNAP to the car. And in my opinion the $800 is worth it.
Doesn't sound to bad,The cars just sit here so time will not be an issue.Plus we have no emissions here, will the motor mounts fit and what about switching over to an automatic tranny? Will that be a real PITA?

My V6 lines were 3/8", same as the V8 lines. However, the in-tank fuel pump will have to be dealt with, one way or another (pressure too high for carb). Either with a regulator to drop the pressure, or remove the in-tank and use the mechanical only on the engine. Personally, I like the electric/regulator/mechanical arrangement.
Stay away from the Performer package. The CC q-jet is a pretty good carb (the best, really, for a daily driver), the Performer intake and cam aren't all that great. A different cam would help to wake it up, and exhaust is pretty much a must-do for performance. The $800 you save not buying the Performer package will pay for a full performance exhaust and new cam.
The engine mounts will have to be moved on the cross member. Removing the a-arms is the best way to get to the mount bolt nuts inside the cross member (you'll want to change the front springs, anyway).
Changing to automatic is much easier than the other way around.
