the fan still should work regardless if you have TBI or carb. on the fan relay, there is a big red wire that needs to go to a 12v source, make sure its fused, or has a fusible link. this is the power wire for the fan into the relay
there is a tan/white wire that also needs to go to a 12v source. you can either run this to a constant 12v source if you want the fan to run when the key is off, or hook it up to an ignition 12v source and it will only run when the key is on. this powers the relay.
then there is a big black/red that goes to the fan plug in, there is another wire on the fan plug in which is black, it needs to go to a good ground.
the most important wire is a green/white, you can either hook this up to a manual switch or a thermostatic switch which if you had TBI you had originally, or do what i did and hook up both. this actually is the ground for the relay, and when you complete the circut the fan comes on. on your TBI motor and the passenger site head in the back between #6 and #8 there is a strange looking plug in that goes into the head. thats the thermostatic switch. when the engine reaches a certian temp, it closes, grounds out and the fan turns on. as i said you can do the same thing with a manual switch, just have the green/white wire on one side, and the other side grounded out. hope this helps.

well thank u very much for all that informative info and i will deff see if i can get it working tomorrrow. one more question for u though, what temp is the fan supposed to come on? thanks oh yea and where is this relay located? and if i hook in the manual switch along with the thermo switch in the head if i forget to turn the switch off one day will the fan still run or will it shut off with the car? i would be wireing the 12v source to the fuse panel to a key on power spot, i belive u said its the tan/white wire. thanks so much man u are a life saver

the relay is between the power booster and the driver side fender. there should be three relays there, fuel pump, fan, and A/C(i am pretty sure about that one) i think the fan should be the one in the middle, look for the one with the tan/white, black/red, black and white/green wires.
the thermo switch factory is designed to work with a 195 thermostat i think the fan kicks on at 205-210 i think, if you put a 180 or 160 degree thermostat in it, you should get the matching fan switch, hypertech makes them and you can get them at autozone.
hook the big red wire(powers the fan) up to the big starter post or straight to the battery with a fuse or fusible link. this wire pulls alot of current and needs to go to one of these two places.
the tan/white wire can be hooked up to a ignition 12v source or full time 12v source. if you hook it up to the ignition 12v, the fan will ONLY work when you have the key ON. If you hook it up to a full time 12v, you can turn the fan ON regardless if the key is on. To answer your question, if you hook it up to the ignition 12v from the fuse panel, when you shut the key off, the fan will turn off too even if you leave the switch on.
