Drive Shaft Lengths

Will a shaft from either an 81 Berlinetta with a T350 or a shaft from an 84 Z28 with a T5 fit my car? Its an 82 Berlinetta that will have the auto from the 81. Its a BOP(buick, olds, pontiac) tranny but in not sure if this dictates the tail (stock or shaft?) length or not.

Thanks in Advance

The Turbo350 is out of an 81 berlinetta. The tranny has two extra places to bolt up to the block, i thought this ment it was a BOP? It musn't be since it bolts up to my 305. Oh well, but i still need to know if the shaft I have from an 84 with a T5 will work in my 82 with the Turbo350. Or will the shaft from the V6 with an auto fit.

Thanks

And it is a short tail shaft tranny.

your tranny has extra mounting holes because it is not original and is a universal design where you can use it with a BOP or Chevy. as for driveshaft length the T5 shaft you have is the only chance you have since the 3rd gen has a 6" shorter wheelbase then the 2nd gen. all autos and sticks from the 3rd gen are the same length but there never was a T350 so??

Were they all 700R4's? What about the cars with V6's, what were those trannies? Does anyone know the lengths of the Turbo350 with the short tail shaft and the length of the T5?

you need a driveshaft from an 82 camaro or firebird with a th200 and it should measure 46 1/8 from end cap to end cap no counting the yoke i just put a th350 in my 85 the 700r4 were 3 in shorter. hope this helps ya.

Not sure all the problems are solved.

You only asked about the driveshaft. You do understand the torque arm thing, right? Also, rear mount location is different between TH200 and TH350.

As stated, all auto and stick trannies are not the same length in 3rd gens. '82 & '83 3-speed auto and 4-speed cars had trannies that were the same overall length as the 6" tailshaft TH350. V6 or V8 didn't make a difference with regard to driveshaft length, because it was the type of tranny, not the type of engine that dictated tranny length.

The "fits all" bellhousing pattern was used in various applications, and could have been used from the factory in the '81. The one I happened to have once upon a time came out of a '76 Olds.

I assume the '81 TH350 is actually a TH350C. That's a good thing, as the lockup is a nice feature. But, the 5-speed ECM won't have the lockup command feature, so you'll have to rig up a switch or retrofit lockup system if you want to use the lockup.

Im not to worried about the torque arm but what would you suggest I do about the trannies having different mounting positions? I have access to a machine shop and welder so fabrication is a definite possibility but not prefered.

And can you explain the lock up? I know my dads 79 Z28 has something like that. But I dont plan on using it of I dont have to.
