AC or no AC?

What do you guys recommend? Should i take out the AC or should i leave it? I just took out my motor for my new crate motor and over the next week or so i will be preping the bay for paint. Should i keep the AC or not? Is it really worth it to take it out? I have t-tops and if it is really hot out i do have a daily driver. Lets just say there have been a total of maybe 10 times i have used it in the 4 years i have owned the car! Any suggestions? If i were to take it out, would i need an AC delete pully off of a 1le car?thanks for your time-Bryan

i know exactly what your talkin about. im swapping over to a 400 and my AC doesnt work. so i think it is coming out. you free up some room under the hood, save some weight, and free up some hp. good luck. hope this helps you out a little

i'm in franklin lake. im not really sur what you need to do to take out the AC. my guess would be to bring it somewere and have it cleaned out. when you get home take the belt and the compressor off(along with the hoses). then just plug all the emty holes up. this is just my guess. if someone else has any imput please let us know

I think there's a cover plate you can get for the firewall for after you remove that black plastic box that sticks out into to engine bay on the passanger side. Maybe that thing's the evaporator. I'm thinking of getting rid of my AC as well when I change out the motor.

I am pretty sure that the black box can stay. I think it is the heater box. I think i should do a search on this process before someone catches a "tude" and tells me to any way instead of helping! Thanks though guys, if i find anything i will post it, later.

I've got V-belts on mine but anyhow just take out the condenser (more air flow to radiator that way anyways) and all the hoses connected to that, and the evap. box, and a/c unit itself. Be careful though, mine was bone dry so I just started pullin hoses.

If it were me, I would leave it in there. I just have this peave with hacked up thirdgens. If it is done right and the heater box changed out as well, then it usually does not look too bad. As far as HP concerns, you will not save or make any more power with removing your a/c. The compressor runs off a clutch, and when it is running freewheel it does not consume any noticable power. In regards to weight, you may save around 25 lbs., big deal. Typically, in order to drop .1 secs in the 1/4, you need to drop 100 lbs. You will however have some more room to work with under the hood, obviously. Either way, it's your call, just be SURE the system is discharged before you take it apart. If your a/c works, then it is well charged. If you don't know, try tapping the service port on the evaporator canister (the silver can near the heater box) and see if any refrigerant discharges.

The "proper" way, the non ac heater box.

i removed mine in about 30 mins. but that was just the compressor and lines and the belt. i had no pressure what so ever in the lines. i still have the heater box and everything there, that has to go and i also took out the condessor infront of the radiator. u would not believe how many leaves and bugs were stuck in there. and also another reason why im removing mine completely is becuz when i get headers it will be alot easier to put them in and also to get to the back bolts and it looks nice with a less clutered engine bay. just wish i could paint mine but doubt that will happen anytime soon.

I hear you on all of that! I took out the rad and the condensor so that we could get the 305 out easier and there was a **** load of crap in that sill where they sit! I am in the process of cleaning the bay up right now. Hopefully i'll take everything off and start painting tomorrow. I still need to go to the body shop and get some colormatch paint so that i can spray my fenders and rad support the color of my car. That will probally get done this week sometime, hopefully! I am trying to do the cleanup now since the motor is out. I think it will be more rewarding once it is done. Just check out the "post engine pics" thread. All of those nice motors and the engine bays on some of them are just embarissing! That is like checking out this really hot chick, and them she turns around and has a but-her face! Doesn't impress me too much! later

taking my the A/C condensor box out was one of the best things i did. I swapped a V8 in, and wasnt going to use the A/C and I got lucky and found a non A/C car in the junkyard. the non A/C heater bolts up to the same place. There is alot more room, which you can kinda tell by the pic. i can get a better pic if you want.

So the non ac heater box was a direct bolt on, i may just do that! thanks I always hold onto my stock parts. Now they are taking up a lot of room, i'll have to figure something out shortly. I keep my stock parts so that if i sell the car i may get more money for it in the future, way distant future that is! lol I guess we'll just have to see. thanks guys
