hi i put a new 88 L98 in my GTA need help.

i just recently put a new L98 in my 87 GTA , because the guy i bought it from said it has a 350 but i learned it had a 305 so i had a new 88 L98 i got from advance auto parts its a recon engine that had put in my 87 monte ss so i decided to put it in the gta the gta vin says it suppose to have a 350 the 8th vin is a 8. so i put the new engine in and now is seems like i cant get the car to go back to top dead center to get the timing perfect. because the timing tab i have is a mr gasket type timing tab. so i dont know if its the same as a 350 timing tab. also which clinder is number one on the distribator cap. i hope some one can help me with my problem.

First get a compression guage, than take out the distributor.put the guage in the #1 front drivers side bring the compression up by truning over the engine till the guage is at max. You may have to turn the engine back an forth by hand to get it at its highest conpression that puts it at top dead center.than clean the balancer an put on a new timimg tap, lining it up with your TDC mark now reinstall the distributor with #1 at 7 oclock with the firewall being at 12 oclock. than just put on plug wires an set your timing.thats all there is to it....
