Welcome aboard.

May I now invite you back to Planet Earth.

I assume you have a Canadian non-computer controlled version. If so, I can save you some money and some disappointment.

There's nothing wrong with your q-jet as a street/performance carb. It has the potential to out-flow that Holley you're drooling over, and will probably out-perform it. There are some specific reasons for that; spending some time on the Carb forum will educate you on those details (ask if you can't figure it out). For one thing, a 750 Holley is too big for a street-driven 305. Period.

A factory 305 has some specific weak areas that limit performance: Exhaust, cam, heads, and air cleaner (notice carb and intake aren't on that list). Headers will definately help, but long tubes with full dual exhaust is overkill. Ground clearance will suffer. Stick with shorties, high-flow y-pipe, high-flow cat (if required), and 3" cat back. That system will handle all a 305 can dish out.

Cam - keep it reasonable. I have no clue what you mean by "violent cam thats outta are 383", but most likely it either isn't anything special, or has so much duration and overlap that it'll kill off a 305. Call the "majors" (Comp, Crane, etc.) and get their advice for a good grind for your combo (which you will have a better idea of after you absorb the info given in this post). If you move the powerband up significantly, you'll have to consider a higher stall torque converter and possibly higher ratio rearend gears.

Heads - stock 305 heads restrict flow on a stock 305. Putting the parts on/in it that you're talking about will be completely ineffective if you don't improve the heads. A good porting job, 1.94" intake valves, springs to match the cam are a must for any kind of performance. Make sure you have adequate clearance between retainer and stem seal/guide for the lift of cam you put in. Port matching the intake will provide adequate flow for this application, and is cheaper than a new manifold (but you probably have a cast iron intake, so considering an aftermarket aluminum isn't unreasonable). Pick the cam and intake manifold to work with each other (a truly "violent" cam and Performer intake are not a match).

Air cleaner - the stock single snorkel air cleaner (assuming that's what you have) is terrible. Either get or fabricate a dual snorkel, or for a weekend warrior/strip car, open element is okay.

Your engine also likely has dished top pistons. That will lower compression and affect power, but it isn't worth it to put new pistons in a 305. If you go to that length, it's time to forget the 305 and get a 350 to build and install.

Good luck. Don't get discouraged. I've learned a lot and avoided many mistakes because of the advice I've received from people on this board.

They had Indians in Canada? J/K If you were to perform those mods listed above or ones similar, that 305 would wake up nicely!
