ZZ4 Swap / Dealer
I am looking at swapping out my long block (L98) for a new ZZ4 short block. I only need to upgrade the manifold. Any idea if how much a Chevy dealer would charge to make the swap ?
Thanks

I doubt you would find a dealer who would do it. That engine is "pre-1975 or off-road use only", so they could get into legal trouble putting one in something else (unless it was the GM kit for factory carb'd '82-'87 cars). Plus they don't much like doing that kind of work on cars approaching the 20-year-old mark.
Buy the crate engine, take it to a "shop" (read: non-dealer), they'd probably charge you $400-800 for the install.
You wouldn't need an intake upgrade - the engine comes with a pretty decent q-jet/square-base manifold. That's where mine came from.

Thanks hoss,
I read alot of your replies and your quite knowledgable. I am currently saving the money. My wife wants me to sell the IROC and to buy a nice 67 - 68 Camaro thats mint and tricked. I am tempted but I will go to Hot August Nights again this August and see if anything catches my eye.

I am the spouse that watches the retirement, kids college funds and emergency fund accounts. So after I have dumped 15k in the IROC she wants to actually have a car where I can sell it and actually break even. Even after all the money I put in this car I would be lucky to sell it for 7.5k. A nice 67 goes for 20-25k.
Alot of cash out of pocket....
I ll keep the IROC for a while.

There is a way to get a smog-legal ZZ4. GM used to sell (yes, past tense) a 350 HO package. It included a ZZ4, dual cats, etc. Now, the kit had to be installed "exactly" the way GM instructed for it to be smog legal.
Although that kit has been disco'd by GM, I talked to Scoggin-Dickey a few months ago and they still had a few packages in stock. And, the last time I checked gmpartsdirect.com, they still had at least one.
I'm editing to address the question about the dealer. If you can find a dealer that has the package in stock, they may be willing to install it. But, and this is a really big but, I've got a feeling the price is going to be high. If you get that package, finding a shop that can install it for less than what a dealer would charge shouldn't be too difficult.
