305 TBI to >305< TPI
I've searched all over the site and i can only seem to find people swapping 305 tbi's for 350 tpi's
well my friend blew the timing chain on his GTA with a 305 TPI and he doesnt feel like fixing it...(aka cant do it) so i'm gunna get it for like 200 bucks
My question is.. is it hard? what mods are required? i have no clue what to change or even if its worth it.
will it even bolt right in?
please dont tell me to just get a 350 because that is not an option for my income and i dont have time to rebuild somethhing from the junk yard
i might be even to get this 305 for 100 so i think its a deal since it only needs a timing chain
thanx for the help

Go for it!
Timing chain is relatively cheap and easy to change. Do it while the engine is out of the car (a cam swap would be easier at that time, too, but that's a lot more complicated).
Switching from TBI to TPI:
Change the engine and all attached to it, obviously.
Wiring harness - basically comes out in one piece once you disconnect it from the engine and the sensors from the car.
Computer - 10 minute job.
Fuel pump - probably the biggest pain. Have to drop the fuel tank.
Throttle cables.
Exhaust - the TPI stuff is much, much better, heads to rear bumper.
Take pictures of both cars before you start, label everything as you take it apart (well worth the extra time that takes).
Why don't you just buy the GTA and fix it? Sell your TBI car (unless yours has some sort of sentimental value).

I'm a little confused. If he can't fix a timing chain, what is he planning on doing? An engine swap that would remove the TPI system is a lot more complicated than fixing a timing chain.

where in NJ are you ? I have just completed a 89' Maf TPI 355 swap into a 92 rs that was a 305 tbi. IF you need help just let me know,or if you feel not sure about doing the swap.Your best tool will be a GM service manual. good luck
