Need help with 383 swap

I'm thinking about doing a 383 swap into my 90' RS. If I change from TBI to carb do I still need a intake manifold w/ EGR provisions?

Depends on your states emissions requirements. Also depends on what you want to accomplish.

I am in the middle of putting a 350 TBI into my 91RS right now and had to keep the EGR (plumbed from my SLP headers into the GM TBI-Vortec manifold). It was an expensive bee-otch, but necessary for emmisions. I have no doubt I'll pass.

I've read on these boards that routing EGR can reduce combustion chamber temps, which will reduce the motors tendency to detonate. On the other side of the argument, you are introducing something besides fresh air and fuel into the chamber, which can hurt combustion.

Whats wrong with a 383 TBI? This would require some chip programming, but any option will take some effort. That setup would likely benefit from adding the 454 engine TBI unit and match a manifold to it.

This could go any number of ways-

Thanks for the info. I'm registered in an area where emissions aren't required so I want to get rid of all the smog stuff. As for going to a carb, its mainly because I have most of the set-up minus the long block. I might add a 6-71 supercharger later too. Seems cheaper and easier that way.
