Famous LT1 Swap

I have tore apart my 83 full on the iterior minus the dash/steering column. I have bought a painless wiring harness for the 94-95 LT1s. Anybody know how hard the painless harness is to put in? Also can I use a stock TPI fuel pump? I am hoping this won't be super hard. Also I am using some gauges out a 1994 camaro so that they fit right in. I will have to fabricate motor mounts. I am not worried about A/C right now. Anything else I should owrry bout? I am going to use a Permacool Aluminum Radiator so no wories there. Should I buy the painless harness for some electric fans that turn on/shut off at a certain temperature? Any info you can help with would be great. Also I have read all the LONG posts about LT1 swaps.

Re: Famous LT1 Swap

Can't help you with the painless harness since i used a stock 94-95 F-body harness.

Yes you can use the stock TPI fuel pump.

If your car currently has a v8 then use the current motor mount brackets on the LT1. If not find a set of a core motor in a salvage yard.

Your '90 RS speedo should be 4K pulse and will work with the LT1 vss.

I would grab a 4th gen f-body radiator, fans and all the hoses from a salvage yard. Dirrect bolt in.

Hard to see in this pic, but thats what I used, just trimed the radiator top mount panel from the 4th gen.

Painless Harness

I will be starting on mine in a few days. I am keeping a daily journal of EVERYTHING I do. I started when I started pulling outt he interior and the sizes of all tools and all that stuff. I am trying to keep a journal of problems and tips for people that do it in the future

What all does the painless harness include. It is probably just everything that connects to make the motor run but not gauges and such right? I have a 94 impala ss LT1 and the stock harness. What would have to be done to make the gauges work in either of these?

Here's what I am doing

1) Bought a painless harness
2) Buying a 94-96 gauge cluster (direct plug in i hope)
3) I am hoping the light harness comes all the way to the bulbs. if it not a direct connection, i will buy the wiring harness from the bulbs back from a junk car.
4) I am using a TH350 so I am not using the tranny harness (muine didn't come with one. bought it that way).

That's all I can tell you now. I will notify this board with any problems.

ALSO YOU WILL HAVE TO GET A DIFFERENT DRIVE/DRIVEN GEAR PROBABLY!

I am using the 700R4 so I already have the right tranny gears. I am not sure, but from what I understand the painless harness doesnt go to the gauges. I think it is just what is needed to make the car run. I think that you would need the stock harnees to wire up the guages. I know most people I have read about doing gauges had to splice wires at the bulk head connector for the gauges to work properly. Here is a site that I found a link to on camaroz28.com that looks like it could be very useful. http://csce.uark.edu/~jgbertr/rb/4th_gen_tech1.html
