Best way to.......
get 400 hp? I currently have a 1990 rs with a tbi 305, I am going to put in another motor and want to get around 350-400 horsies at the wheels. What would you guys suggest, I am not that experienced with motors, heads, cams etc. I want to go fuel injected though to. Any and all input is appreciated.

How much $$$ would you like to spend? There are plenty of 350's and bigger out therethat will get you to that range . Just how much do you want to spends. You could pick up a ZZ4 for apx $3,600 or so and that will be puting you right in your range, or if you know some people you can by a used block and build off that for much cheaper. You could also pick up a basic GM replacement motor that wont get you that much power but will be cheaper. Let us know a little more of what you ahve to work with.

Right now I have nothing but the old 305. I was maybe considering buying a shortblock crate and putting a mini-ram or a holley stealth ram on it. As far as heads, cam, etc... that is where I need the help. I want to stay with a small block, but I just don't know that much about the workings of motors. I want it to be pretty streetable, it will most likely be a daily driver during the summer and spring. Where should I go to get parts? What type of pistons forged, hyperutectic? What size cam, heads? Would a crate be my best bet. I have a friend that built my 305 but I lost his number and he is pretty busy, also I am swaping out the 700r4 for a six speed at the same so I was kinda looking forward to doing it myself.
Also, what would I need to do with the computer, just buy a new one, or can I put a chip in mine?
I know that the fuel system will need to be upgraded, as well as intake and exhaust is there anything else?
Sorry for all the questions, like I said I am really new to anything this indepth. Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated.

Buy this gm motor part #12513151. It has a forged crank, hypereutectic pistons, PM connecting rods, roller cam and lifters... complete long block. The heads suck but you can't build a motor this strong for what it cost. It cost about $1500.00 . I have a diff opinion on heads than most people on this board. I like the AFR heads but unless you plan on turning your new motor more than 6000 rpm and are going to run monster compression with a huge cam don't waste the money. I have yet to see AFR 190 heads in a modest street motor make good power for what they cost. I don't like the vortech heads either. You are limited on options with the vortech heads. IMHO I would say to stay with a small cc head with good velocity. You will be much happier with the power on the street of the smaller head. Torque does amazing thing for how a car moves! AFR 180 or 185 max, but then again they are about $1400.00 . Once you figure out what heads you are going to run call Comp Cams. The # is1-800-999-0853. They will help you pick the right cam for your setup. The Mini Ram really shines in the upper RPM range(above 5500 RPM) but falls short in the normal operating range. I would think the Stealth Ram would be similar to the Mini Ram because of the short runner. The SuperRam is legal for street use (the miniram and stealth ram are not) and is useful till about 6000 RPM. This is just my opinion and in no way am I telling you what to do. You asked for it. Hope this helps
