Engine Swap
Engine Swap
HELLO, I AM IN A VERY TIGHT SPOT. I HAVE A 1988 CAMARO 2.8 5-SPEED. THE ENGINE IS BLOWN. I GOT A 305 FROM A 1988 FORMULA WITH A AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. I WANT TO CHANGE MY 1988 CAMARO RS TO AN AUTOMATIC . I ALREADY HAVE THE 305 ENGINE AND THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ALL CONNECTED UP RIGHT NOW. I KNOW I;LL HAVE TO TAKE OUT THE CLUTCH PEDAL BUT WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO CHANGE OUT TO MAKE THIS WORK ? DO I ALSO NEED TO TAKE OUT THE WIRING HARNESS FROM THE 1988 FORMULA TO PUT IN MY 1988 CAMARO RS ? IF SO, WILL I ALSO NEED TO SWITCH THE COMPUTOR BOX AS WELL ? I HAVE NEVER DONE A ENGINE SWAP BEFORE NOW, SO I AM PRETTY MUCH LOST !!! ALSO, WOULD I BE IN BETTER SHAPE TO CHANGE OUT THE CARBUATOR AND CAM AND INSTALL HEADERS ON IT AS WELL ? I HAVE ALSO NEVER CHANGED OUT A WIRING HARNESS AS WELL. SO I AM LOST. PLEASE HELP. THANK YOU VERY MUCH..

Is the 305 carbed or FI? I do not think you have to switch the harness. Just the ECM. However, if you are mixing between carb, TBI, and TPI there might be some harness issues.
As far as conferting to automatic. You will have to do some welding and fabricating to get the auto trans shift mechanism to bolt to the floor. The clutch saftey wiring can be modified to work as the neutral saftey switch with your auto setup.
