go to a junkyard and get an old block, make sure you get the junkyard to agree that if the block is cracked or damaged that you get your money back, any 350 that isn't cracked is good pretty much...i got a 350 2 bolt bored out to 355 completely bare and ready to be built for 125$....you can definately get a 350 cheap if you look, i lucked out that a friend had a 100% clean and ready to be built block on an engine stand he wanted to get rid of.....if you go the junkyard route your gonna have to clean/check the block out yourself....but it'll be cheaper...unless your going 450+HP it doesn't really matter 2 or 4 bolt mains.....

green's question here, how exactly can you know if the engine is damaged? how easy is it without tearing it to pieces? plus... is any 350 will do, or should we look for a specific kind of car?

A 350 is a 350 (unless it a BOP 350
) But all 350 blocks are the same (except I heard something about oil filters placement on Nova's in the 60's?). But don't worry a 350 Chev is pretty much all the same (I should say that is only about pre-85 cars)

i have a 305 that i could sell to you for around 400. it's complete with oilpan to carb. i also have a transmission 700r4 that is in great working order too. p.m. if your interested. engine and trans have a 113,000 miles on them. they ran fine but the chance for a great crate engine deal came up.
plus the engine and trans are at a chevy dealership so maybe they could do some sort of shipping deal for me.
p.m. me if you are interested.
