I would say areound 80,000 to 100,000 depending how well it was driven. But a performance rebuild is around 10,000 (Becasue if I rebuild it it's not stock and if it's not stock odds are I'm beating it )

who knows.. some seem to last forever.. Zephers brother has an LT1 transam with 140k on the odo and it still pulls low 13s in the quarter..

if its not puffing smoke, burning excessive oil, pinging etc.. it is probably still fine.. but for us fine is never good enough.

200,000 is not unreasonable....on synthetic oil.

How many miles an engine averages has more to do with maintenance than what type of oil was used.

I have 3 engines right now that have more than 150K miles on them.

My car with 186K
My '93 MX6 with 168K
My '83 Chevy 1/2 ton with AT LEAST 135K (only has a 6 digit odometer)

None of them has ever had a single drop of synthetic used.

I don't see any problem with a SBC lasting 500K miles if you take care of it.

Some have been known to run 1 million miles, but that's far from ordinary. I'd say anywhere from 100k to 250k or so is the average. The 350 in my truck lasted 100k miles till it blew a head gasket (crappy stock gaskets), but we rebuilt it and it's ready for another couple 100k miles.

Somewhere around 150-300k miles (depending on maintenance and luck) the rings start to become useless. Thats if the surrounding parts dont die first.

I know for a fact of a 89 TBI truck with 350 that currently has 206,000. It uses less than a quart between changes and pulls down about 20mpg on the highway (5 speed with 3.08 rear, edelbrock headers). It has had the oil changed every 3k miles with conventional penzoil. It hasn't really been babied either.

Well, I do know if you e-mail Chevy, and say "My camaro just passed 100K miles! "

They send you a chevy 100,000 mile + T-shirt.

I e-mailed them when my first car (Sprint) hit 100K. I said, "chevy rocks, this car is still running great!" on their, "contact" form. I filled out my home address, and all fields required.

About a month later, the shirt arrived. Had no idea they would send me something, so it was kind of cool.

I used it for oil changes, and when I worked on my Camaro. ; )

I have a 94' Chevy Blazer with a 350 and 228,000 miles on it and it starts up fast..gets 20 mpg. Oil changed every 3k and always used penzoil sometimes quaker state. It has been driven normally with a little bit of beating here and there

My pontiac trans am 305 has 170000 but....I have a bad wrist pin now so I found a good deal on a 400 and thinking about making a screamer.

Thanks for the reply's...

Im asking because Im buying a 92 Caprice unmarked police car, and it ONLY has 137,000 miles on it.

Im not sure if I should rebuild it, or just get a new cam, intake, ect. ect.

I guess I'll wait till I get it to the house to see...

Thanks again for the reply's

Peace

My friend ditched his stock 73 350 motor out of his Monte Carlo for a 406 about 3 years ago. After pulling it apart we found that most of the compression rings were broken, some in multiple spots and one of the rods was bent. We were pretty surprised since the motor still ran strong. It had approximately 120,000 on it and he wasn't exactly careful in how he ran it.

Remember that the motor probably has way more "mileage" on it than that. I heard somewhere that you should multiply the mileage by at least 2 to account for all the time the motor is left running.

I guess they owe me 2...the Camaro with 146K, and an 89 Blazer with 230K. I wonder if Chrysler does something similar for their late model transmissions...ya know , something that says "Chrysler transmissions....1,000 miles and still going strong!" (Had to rebuild one at 50K...and dumped an engine at 100K. POS...and I used to be a mopar guy!)

137K on a police car isn't like 137K on mom and dad's Caprice. Yeah, they're maintained...but...those are hard miles. Good luck.

yeah im afraid im going to have to agree with everyone else on this one. cop cruisers take a lot of hard miles. besides have you ever driven one of the new police interceptor crown-vics??? omg!!! ........TORQUE!!!!!!!!

besides you know cops dont care about thier cars, they use em for a few years and then our ticket money buys em a new one.

if i was a cop id burn out of every stop sign, redlight, and intersection in the county

I'd take a cop cover over any of the other used cars out there. I know they are maintained. There's no guarantee that a used car out there has had regular maintenance. Sure, one of the prior owners says it has been, but you never know if the first 10,000 miles were run without an oil change, for example. However, finding someone out there that's so **** retentive about there car would be a rare and great find. I tend to think the average user is more casual about maintenance.

Yeah, but it was a Narc. officers car, not a patrol car. So Im sure it doesnt have to many curb hours on it.

Either way, Im only paying $300.00 for the whole car (missing left fender, headlights, and hood)

Thanks
