68 block, will a TPI SYSTEM WORK????

I have my 85 Z-28 and when I got it, it had a block from 1968, it's a 4-bolt main with a set of 2.02 heads on it now, well I blew it up, I put 189,045 miles on it. I just wondering if a set of 88-92 Turned port injection heads off a 350 would work, ANY HELP IS GREATLY NEEDED, I'm only 18 and I dont have the knowledge of all the TRICKS of the trade yet, but I'm getting there. thanks and I think this site is like our mecha for third gens. PAULIE

I'd check that '68 block for a place to put a knock sensor. It may have one, it may not.

Hey that's good to know, because I have a '68 block in my garage that I would like to use one day. I've heard different opinions on this, and I'm wondering about the camshaft... will the '87 and newer roller cams fit into that '68 block? What about a one piece rear main crank?

no and no. Roller cams can be had for older blocks but at a considerable expense. a 2pc seal crank can be used in a 1 pc block with an adapter but vise versa isn't possible.

Actually, in 1955 when they invented teh small block, they knew that someday they'd need a place for that knock sensor, so all small blocks have come with it since day one. It was just called something else for all those years before they added computer control.... "coolant drain".

No you can't put the factory roller stupidity in an older block. However you can use the roller system that all the rest of us had been using for all those years before GM accidentally put their summer engineering intern's sophomore project into production, after they heard about rollers, and then butchered the whole concept. The original roller system used the lifters joined with link bars in pairs, one pair per cyl, and a cam button between the cam and the timing cover to hold it in place. No special block, no different cam design, no goofy failure-prone garbage in the lifter valley, no extra production costs and casting modifications..... just bolt in and go. Too easy.

I'm guessing from your post that people have had problems with the factory roller setup. What gives? Do you think it would be better to go with an older style block? What's the L98 roller setup like? I've never been inside one.... yet.
