My forehead looks like a speed-bump, because iv'e slapped it so many times !!! I bought an 87 T/A LG4 (as per VIN #) from some kid for $400 bucks. Needs very minor body work but otherwise in great shape. The motor runs fine and strong eventhough it smokes a little upon startup, or when I rev it up. After getting the casting#'s for the heads, it turns out that they were from a 350 motor. I decided it would be worth the effort to wedge myself down behind the drivers side rear block to check the casting #'s there. To my suprise, it appears the motor is an early 70's L48. It's all stock, no performance add ons. I was in the process of looking for a 350 to rebuild as I thought I had a 305. Is this L48 worth rebuilding and adding performance parts or should I still look for a later 350 block to rebuild ???? I read in some of the threads that the L48 is on the low side of HP. What would be the better way to go ???? Thanks ! Fakeyankee.

a 350 is a 350, main differences are the cam and head selections, so yea its worth rebuilding, get a good cam, a good set of heads or rework the ones you have and you will be set

If it is in fact really a L48 (probably is, if it's easy to mistake for a LG4) then it has dished pistons, crappy heads (882 or 624), and a crappy 929 cam.

It's a 350 block though; one block is pretty much as good as another. You need just about everything else if you want it to run really good.
