Picking up a new block.. some questions

Im excited, im picking up a new 350 block to build this weekend. Its bored .40 over, all refinished, with pistons, rods, and a 400 crank. It's only a 2 bolt main, but thats okay, because im not building a drag racer...

Just a few questions spring to mind.. I tried to find some answers via search, but not much luck, sorry After all this is an engine swap board

1) Do you think its better to go with a carbed application, for an FI application?

1a) If I decide to go with a FI application, will my current MPFI thats in my 6er convert?

2) Will I need a new tranny? I've heard both yes and no on this subject. I've also heard my current flywheel will adapt to the new motor. Whats the scoop on that?

3) This engine will be sitting around for a while, because im going to slowly build it as I learn more, and get the money for the parts I need. How would you reccomend I go about storing an engine? I had just planned on putting it on an engine stand in my garage.. how will I keep condensation out?

Thanks for reading, any advice is welcome

(P.S) I know I will need some suspension, but im already planning on looking for a Z28 donor car for that purpose

The car this is going into has a V6 now?

Forget the V6 MPFI. The V6 tranny is useless as well. As is the flexplate.

Put a leaf bag around the engine while it is on the engine stand. Squirting a little oil into each spark plug hole and rotating the engine a couple of times isn't a bad idea, either. Unless you live in a 100% humidity area, that should do it.

1)
FI will cost more to make you go fast. If you don't have to go through emissions in your town, definatly a carb *but not too big* will out perform a stock TPI, losing a few ft lbs of torque. My 350 swap with TPI gets me 15MPG! My friends 350 with a non CC carb gets 20-25mpg and is easier to tune and no sensors.

1a)
Wont fit at all

2)
If it is an auto, yes... sounds like it's a manaul. I've heard many people say that the v6 manual wont last behind a V8, however myfriend's has gone for a year behind a 350. Ya never know, you can try it and if it fails, get the beefier V8 T5.

I don't think the flywheel will fit. You'll need to get a 153Tooth Flywheel, fitting either 2 piece rear seal (Block is '86 and older) or a 1 piece seal (87 and up).

You'll need a Camaro V8 Bellhousing... From '84-'92 should be the same. I've heard you can reuse the clutch fork, and you can reuse the slave cylinder.

You'll need a Starter for a V8 Manual for camaro. Buy a V8 clutch kit, and then get the clutch disc from an '87 S10 4WD pickup.... it's the biggest clutch disc to fit the V6 T5 input shaft spline I've found. It's 9.7. The clutch disc you have now is 8". If your v6 t5 fails and you get the v8 t5, you'll already have the 10.4" clutch disc that came with the kit for it.

3) If it's already built, just douse the inards with motor oil to keep from surface rust. You shouldn't have to rotate anything because if it was built right there will be plenty of assembly lube to keep it moving. Rotate it anyway to get some oil around. Hell you could even pour all 5 quarts in and then turn your oil pump to prime it also.

Then put a leaf bag over it like stated before. Also dont' put the engine in the front of your garage, put it in the back towards the house.

Okay, I just talked to the guy, and its gonna be 350 dollars for the block, bored 40 over, with a 350 crank, pistons and rods already assembled.

Am I getting a good deal? This block has been worked on, it is fresh and ready to be rebuilt.. its even got the water pump holes drilled.

As for the rear end/tranny, im not feeling suicidal, so I will go ahead and drop my V6 tranny when its time, and replace it with a used one.

I pick the block up friday.. be prepared for alot of questions from me over the coming months

And thanks for your help thus far

The shortblock sounds like a decent deal, almost too good to be true, so a little caution there.

Your V6 tranny will not work on a V8. It won't hook up. If you understand the difference between a flywheel and flexplate (I could have sworn you said "flexplate" the first time I read it), a V6 manual transmission can be used on a V8 if you are willing to have special parts made.

The best way to turn a V6 car into a V8 car is to sell the V6 car and buy a V8 car. Now you have something worth putting that rebuilt shortblock into.

If you insist on putting the V8 into that V6 car, then go out and find a donor factory V8 car that has the transmission and induction type in it already that you want in your car. If emissions inspection is an issue for you, then you'll be limited to a donor car that is the same year or newer than your current V6 car. Change all the stuff that's different between the V6 and V8 cars, and you'll be on the road.

The list of things needing changing is long - longer if the emissions-thing applies to you.
