TBI 305 to Carb 383.....Fuel pump question

I swapped out my TBI 305 to a Carb'd 383 with a mechanical fuel pump on the block. Does anyone know where to get a plain pick-up to replace my in tank fuel pump. I'm getting a new tank, but I can't seem to find any plain pick-ups. Any web links would be greatly appreciated.

Junkyard.

Oh, excuse me; "Used automobile parts dealer."

Any non-EFI type will do. I believe all were 3/8" (at least my carb'd V6 car was).

The thing you're looking for is called the "sending unit". The pickup is part of it.

just order a sending unit for a 85-86 camaro with a 305 4bbl. It will be just what you need, and the fuel gauge will still read accurately. You could order one from GM, or any numerous online parts stores like parts for less.com or rock bottom auto.com

You could just modify the old sending unit. If you cut the line just above where the fuel pump mounts and then put a 3/8 compression fitting with a piece of line that brings it down to where the old piece was, that will work. It worked for me. It saves a lot of money too.

I just droped the tank out of my '89 bird today and Mcas7 I was curious what did you do about the little filter sock for the pick up? Did you get one for a carbed car?

I just took it off and didn't use one. I'm not sure if this is the correct method, but I just figured that anything that gets picked up in the tank will be caught by the fuel filter. I've been driving like that for about 4 or 5 months now and I haven't had any problems at all. As long as I don't dump sand in my tank, i'll be all set.

Yeah, that sock is really to protect the in tank pump from crap in the tank, since the fuel filter is after the pump and won't protect it. Since you will be using an engine block mounted pump, the factory FI fuel filter (mounted under the car by the tank) is before the new pump and will protect it from debris. You will be just fine without the sock as long as you keep the under car fuel filter.
