LT1 starter... does it need shims?
Just installed the LT1 and am using the LT1 starter. When I start her up there seems to be a winding noice. Is this common on the new lt1 starters or do I need to shim the starter?
I'm using the T5 trans with a RAM clutch(didn't think this info was needed).
any info would B great.

Most starters use shims. Check the clearance between the flywheel gear and the starter gear. If they are meshing to tightly, you need a shim. Sorry I don't know what the clearance spec is.

I didn't use a shim but then again, I have a t56 with my Lt1 and haven't had a problem yet. If there is a close by GM dealer(doesn't matter which one), slide by their parts department and ask them to see a diagram.

TexasLT1, dwhen you crank the LT you doen't hear a winding noise(i'll last for like half a second - the LT1 fires up). I'm just curious because I wouldn't want to have to buy another starter in a couple of months when it's brand new from GM.
Thinking about taking it to a dealer.

Are you sure this whinning is not comming from the gears that drives the optispark and the waterpump ??? because they're is some obvious noise from that on all lt1 engines.

no, this sounds like it's from the starter. it's a dominating sounds from the underneith.
(i know this is a seperate question/issue)
When I first start driving and put her into first. the car vibrates(but not when I shift into the other gears). then sometimes when I come to a complete stop(or stop light) it'll stall. And when I turn the car off - I smell buring(almost like to smell of old or rotten eggs). what's up with that?
