Which road should I take?

OK guys, its time for me to start lookin for a new engine. The 305 aint doing well. I got seals and valves blown and oil all over the place. She is still runnin hard as she can and holding her own, but its time to put her down.

I dont really want to go with a crate motor unless I get a good deal on it. So I was thinking of either getting a 350 block from a yard or gettin a Long Block assembly.

I would like to her horror stories or opinions of either options. Also if anyone has any good links to sites that sell long blocks (full rotating assemblies) or even short blocks please send them over.

I've been looking and reading for awhile and haven't really found much usefull information, so thats why I"m coming to you all.

My plans for the car to just to have a nice street car, something I can take to the track and get some decent times but something that I can drive around with out haven to filler up ever 3miles.

So shoot me what everyou all got, it's going to be a HUGE help.

Pork

If you have the will to, might as well build your own motor. You'll get it done cheaper and you can get more for your money if you think the engine out and find deals and whatnot. Plus you can build it to whatever specs you want and go however radical you want. It's mostly just time spent checking tolerances, rechecking... checking again.. torquing... that kinda stuff. Not to mention the satisfaction when it fires up will be fun

Do you have emission restrictions you have to deal with? Your options are huge, if not.

Yeah we have emissions testing. They stick the sniffer up the tail pipes and make sure you have the CAT, and some times they do a visual inspection under the hood, but that depends on which idiot is working at DMV. I'm trying to find a shop the will...let me Sliiiiiiide on emissions though.

well if your goiong to keep it TBI then you can do a motor swap for a good price. you can used the oil pan, water pump, sometimes the heads, you can sue the full vavle train (cam, lifters push rods, rocker arms,) you can even use the crack shaft if it is still good, so if you get a 350 short block all you need in the block, pistions, conecting rods, rings, full seal kit, and thats it. if you can find a 350 short block for under $200 and i think you could get your 350 rebuilt for around $1,500 to $2,000 but that isn't for like raceing pistions and what not. you are going to have to get the block hot tanked , horned out or bored out get new frez. plugs, get new bearings, (your going to need the place that hot tanks the motor to put the cam bearings in) all in all. doing a 305 to 350 is a eazy swap. once you have the cam bearings put in and its hot tanked and you have all the parts, you could have the 350 in the car in a week.... or a weekend if you really tried.

Yes your wrong, they have the same stroke, the 305 cranks are just balanced a little different because of the lighter pistons in a 305.

I don't think thats right... they are balanced a little differently because of the rods, not the pistons.

the 305 rods would be shorter and the piston would be longer from top to bottom

305 rods are the same length as 350 rods (5.700" center to center)

Pistons are the same height (1.56" from center of wrist pin to nominal top surface)
