wrong vss connector

i am putting a 350 tpi into what was a 1986 v6 5 speed car i am using the 5 speed, and the tpi wiring harness is from a 1985 305 automatic car , the vss conector for the auto is diffrent than the one for the stick, should i cut and rewire or what? the auto is a four pin,and im not sure how it comes out and the stick is a 2 pin ,and it unscrews from the side of the tranny

By your descriptions you it sounds like you are talking about the TCC connector on the auto and the reverse light switch on the manual. Where abouts on the manual is the 2 pin connector, if there is an electronic VSS in the tranny it should be in the tail stock, the reverse light connector is in the gear case, so make sure you are looking at the right parts.

The 1985 TPI harrness doesn't have a VSS connector since the spedo was cable driven in '85.

What year is the motor/tranny from ?

Just change the VSS out, put the right one into the trans that you're putting into the car.

RB, can you provide some more info on thsoe sensors?
I have an '85 Jimmy, that just has a cable drive for the speedo, and the ECM that I am using doesn't like the optical VSS that I am using, it was worth a try. I need to swap to a magnetic VSS of some sort

miller: I'm not 100% sure on this but I beleive the reverse light wires are in the car, more specifically attached to the nuetral park switch that should be attached to the shifter in the console. If you don't see that switch on the tranny, there should be about 6 wires attached to it, take the console cover off and look there, the reverse light wires will green and blue. The wires in the 4 pin plug attached to the auto tranny should just be the TCC and 4th gear wires.
