V6 to V8...
V6 to V8...
My '91 RS is only a V6, and my dad supposedly has a V8 lying around that he wants to drop in it. I don't know a whole lot about cars, and I can't always get ahold of him...but what else would I need to do besides switching the engines?
I know it's complicated, so can someone explain? Remember, I'm close to a beginner. :hail:

Really, to do that job you should have a donor car. Otherwise you will go crazy trying to figure everything out.
It would be a lot easier that way ( to have a donor car),
But a lot of motor swaps have been done totally custom
( example: V6 to an V8 LS1 motor and trans.) without
the use of a stand alone donor car.
This way, though, takes some skill, research, time, and
electrical diagrams and manuals also. But, doesn't
any swap do?

It's not gonna be a quest, my dad's one of the best mechanics in Tampa. And I'm not talking about someone who is certified with a big store...he's just been working on cars his whole life, specifically Camaro's. So he knows every nook and cranny.
The RS is already ready for a V8, so I don't think I'm gonna have to change anything. He said I wouldn't. He just finished putting back together his bright yellow '73 Camaro, after about 6 months of working on it from the ground up.

One thing is for sure. If your going to use a carb you'll have to get either a Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator or take the intank pump out and replace where the pump goes with 3/8" hard metal brake line and run a mechanical fuel pump. The reason why is because your '91 uses fuel injection whitch works at around 35psi when a carb on the street needs somewhere around 6psi. There are technical articles on this site that go into more detail about it also
Your dad is about half wrong on your motor swap! Yes, the RS
is somewhat ready for a V8, because the our cars come
with V8s as an option. But you'll need to do some prep
work with this swap! You will need a complete V8 motor
with every front engine accessory, you will also need a
V8 style 700R4 trans. ( or V8 T-5 bellhousing, of you have
a manual.)
You will need to buy new V8 motor mounts, you will need
to relocate the brake line that runs across the crossmember
where the motor mounts to, you will also need to move
the V8 motor mounts foward to accompany the V8 motor,
you will need a V8 tachometer from a 1991-1992 Camaro
for a direct bolt in, this is just the beginning! It takes even
more than that to "drop in" a V8!
You WILL need to splice in your existing wiring from the bulk
head connectorto properly wire up your V8 motor so your gauges will work. You will also need to splice in your fuel pump wiring toaccompany your V8 motor. That's IF you keep your existing fuel injection system! If you decide on a carburetor,
then you'll have to convert the entire fuel system to work
with a carburetor.
