about 2 weeks ago, me and a friend were talking and i asked if he ever heard of anyone puting a 500 caddy in a 3rdgen... lol

well it fits..

i was looking thru the pics quickly... at first it appeared you were patching the floor... in the last pic, i see what looks like 2 frame rails and a massive crossbrace and no floor...

you just going make your own custom floor after the exhaust and everythign is done?

I'd like to follow this build-up, but could you possibly add a new page for the newer pics (because it takes so long for the initial pics to load, that I can't bypass them to see the 500 installed)....

I was suprised how much clearance there was with the 500 in there. I have always heard horror stories about putting big blocks in 3rd gens. It doesn't look like you will have any problems at all. That will be awesome, keep up the work.

You're going to have quite the torque monster there that's for sure!!!

Will this be strictly set up for the track, or are you planning to run it on the street?

Why so far back through the firewall? My 454 fit fine without the need for cutting the firewall... did you do it because of motor mount issues? Curious.

hey guys, i re did the web page so loadong should be about half now, split it up a bit , so hopefully it will be a little better. i guess my over all goal for the 500 is to take the motor up to a 540 and still try to keep it all under the hood to look bone stock then in the future add the more x-pensive mods, all the inner tubing is goin to be intergrated with the body so all the plastic panels will covering 90% of of it. but get the best support so i can hopefully make it to 1000 + hp/tq in the future and not have to mess w/the frame again, as oppose to being street legal pry not but you make see it more on the road than the track if thats what your asking hehe. in response to you post Street Lethal, i wanted to keep it as far back as possible to try to get a better center point of balance and get a tad bit more traction in the rear an maybe a little better side to side action as well.

will be posting more pics pry later this weekend depending how far i get so stay posted and happy racing.

Excellent!

Just be very very careful, and not too cheap when choosing a bellhousing for a 1000HP set up like that (especially with the tranny that far back now).

Utilize something that is virtually in-destructable!!!!

Pretty cool swap...can't wait to see pictures of the finished car. I'm swapping a 72 Eldorado 500 into my girlfriend Redraif's 76 International Scout II, but that project is sort of on the backburner right now. My 87 TA is about to get a carbed, turboed Pontiac 455..still haven't decided if I'm going with two , or just one huge one! The 455 is going to be more of a bolt in, since Indian Adventures makes mounts to work with the stock V8 frame mounts, and the trans crossmember and torque arm are coming from Spohn.

Cheapest and easiest thing to do for the transmission is to get a BOP TH400, it bolts right up to the Cad block. And for the torque arm get Jeg's arm that mounts to the floor pan instead of the tail housing. CMD www.cad500parts.com does make an adapter plate to bolt a chevy bolt pattern bell housing to the Cad and also make a billet steel flywheel. As a side note if you do go with a stick better make sure it's got some good parts inside cause even a totally stock low compression 500 makes 493ft lbs of torque.

Spohn makes a nice torque arm and crossmember that will fit a Turbo 400 in a third gen. The torque arm bolts up to the crossmember.

Spohn makes custom length ones. Search around their website and you'll find it.

Someone just started doing heads for the Caddy motor (CMD maybe? don't remember...), but from what I understand some of the factory heads are pretty good. If you ever read Steve Magante's article in Hot Rod a few years ago where they swapped an Eldorado 500 and Th400 into a Chevette (!), he mentioned having the factory heads flowed and that they flowed more than a Mopar Max Wedge head (one of their better factory race heads from the early 60s). I don't remeber specifics, but it was pretty impressive. A mild porting and polishing job would probably do wonders.

The new aluminum heads for the Caddy are made by Bulldog, they also are making a single plain intake for it. Both CMD and MTS are selling the Bulldog heads, they go for around $2000 assembled. Yeah I remember that Hot Rod article to! They had to cut like half the fire wall out.
