Starter for a l98 and a t-5

ok, i did an engine swap from a 88 gta (5.7 L98) to a 86 trans am body with a t-5 tranny. but the starter (from the l98) wont fit in the bell housing (from the 86 t-5). what kind of starter do i need?

Try one for the year of the bellhousing. I assume that would be an 86, same as trans...

I am surprised that it doesn't interchange...

me too...i tried a total of about 7 different starters and none of them fit...but i think i figured out where the problem originates. when i had the t-5 out during the swap, the bell housing got crushed (gee, i guess you can run it over with a flat bed? ) so i got one from my friend. it was a bell housing for a t-5, but maybe they made different ones?

edit: oh also, an '86 trans am came stock with a v6. i tried the v6 starter but it did NOT fit.

t-5 bellhousing are all the same 82-92. however t-5's that bolt to a v-6 are different. go to any junk yard find a t-5 that is off a third gen and was on a v-8 and that should fine. as for the starter. i did a swap and the starter i had to get was meant for a 90 corvette. bolted in fine and cranks over with no problems only a 125 which was good.
