LS1 or L98 supercharged
LS1 or L98 supercharged
I reall want to do an engine swap and i have decided i am either going with a built up L98 with a vortec supercharger or a LS1. Does anyone have any opinions about either. Thanks a lot.

LS1 N/A will give you just as much if not more power than the s/c L98. Plus less weight so you can put on better suspension stuff, like Hotkis lowering springs to help in track times or overall drivability. But it's new technology and that equals $$$$, so just make sure you plan it right and build the engine up as you want before it goes into the car.good luck

What's a supercharger on a L98 worth powerwise? I have no idea.
I've seen L98's with all bolt on's tuning struggle to make 220rwhp.
I've seen heads and cam L98's struggle to make 280rwhp at the local dyno.
My 99 T/A make 323rwhp & 335rwtq, with a lid, Y pipe, catback and CAI package. My LS1 T/A average 23.5 to 24.5 mpg with a best of 32.8mpg. Worst ever mpg 16mpg on the cars first tank of gas, when it was new.
I've seen a 02 TA/WS6 make 324rwhp & 340rwtq bone stock down to the air filter.
My 99 T/A with heads & cam, bolt on's, 4.10 gears made 418rwhp & 404rwtq. My car is nothing special. Many LS1's have broker ~450+ rwhp with just heads and cam. Stock short block.
My heads are mediorce TEA 5.3's and 224 cam. The set up is fully streetable. The car is very driveable even in a parking deck. Average mpg is 21 to 23.5 mpg. I've not been on a long trip yet to know what the high mpg is. Car has gotten 26mpg medium trips. Worst mpg has been 19mpg. Car has 5,000+ miles since heads and cam no issues.
Personally, I wouldn't spend one cent on building a L98 TPI for anything. Dumping the whole TPI set up and going port injection with a big Throttle Body with a L98 long block might make sense. If you want a stroker that L98 will be much less expensive than an LS1 stroker.
Good Luck.
BTW - I'm planning to swap an LS1 into my 91 RS.

I say swap in a LS1 if you want an LS1 and you have the means to do the swap. If you just care about power, then the Gen 1 block might be a better choice. It all depends on how much work you can do yourself. The more you can do the cheaper it will be. The LS1 is a better engine design, but add together the cost of the complete swap (paying someone else to do it?) and it can get very expensive. I got a Vortech S/C on my (currently) stock L98 and I can almost hang with my friends Z06. I'm right up there with LS1's with boltons and I haven't done heads, cam, intake, or tuning yet. But this is on the street where nothing is equal, not too sure on the track ...

There's a big price difference. I'd say go with the supercharged L98 since it will be near equal with the stock LS1 and then it's a standard SBC so there's a huge aftermarket for parts; usually cheaper than the LS1 stuff because it's still relatively new.

my friend had an lb9 and supercharger and was putting out 500+ HP. (there was very little on the car that was stock). i'd imagine with a 350 you could put out more, but its gonna cost $$$$. so the LS1 in the long run might be the best idea.
