ok, so unfortunitly im getting married (well that part aint so bad) but the insurence on my 98 GTP is just to high for me to keep it. the girl who wants to buy my car is selling her 86 firebird 2.8. since ill need a car to drive and she kept it in mint condition i said i would work her car into the deal. so its an 86 firebird 2.8 auto. i have a 406 tpi engine i want to swap in, and whats involed with going to a 5 or 6 speed. all mods cant take more than a day or weekend cause its also my driver. i can get it done and have many resourses to do so, just want to know what i need to do it.

Im pretty sure the insurance for a camaro with a 406 in it will be way more than your GTP was.

No, the insurance on a 98 GTP will be much higher than the insurance on a 86 2.8L base bird. MUCH cheaper.

The Insurance doesn't need to know about the 406TPI, nope, nope, nope.

I don't have good news for you.

You'll need some unique parts that only come from the factory, and they don't make them anymore. The best way to get a V8 into a V6 car is to get a donor factory V8 car and switch all those parts over the the V6 car. You already have an engine you want to use, but the answer is still the same. Even with all the parts available and ready to go in, you're probably still looking at more than a long weekend to get it done.

3rd gen T5 behind a 406 isn't a good idea. So, you're talking Tremec or T56. That alone is a good weekend's worth of work.

I'd suggest you drive the V6 car as-is while looking for a proper factory V8 car into which you put your 406 with all the proper supporting cast.

As for insurance, depends upon how they do things in your area. Some states just go by the VIN, other companies require seeing the car and verifying what it's got. There have been stories about people who insured their car as a V6, have a claim, and the company finds out it had a V8 in it - those stories don't have happy endings.

FWIW, getting married will help lower your premiums.

k

so maybe i wont take the bird then. as far as weekend projects i got the motor out of my 90 z24, yep a 3.1 and tore off the top half, ported the heads, intake, installed a bigger cam and injectors, slipped it back in on a saturday afternoon. wound up with a top speed of 155, running 14.2 in the 1/4. thats one reason for the insurence. tickets + financing a car = high rates. im paying 7grand a year on this car.

Dude!!!! You are nuts!! I'm paying for a GP SE, the 91 Z, and a 99 Caravan. Cost me, and my wife $1000/yr. But we don't have tickets, but it is full coverage on the GP, and the van. Is it any cheaper to ride a bike!!!???

as far as the insurance thing.

you insure the car. it goes off the VIN 99% of the time. thats why theres a engine letter in there, and most people dont know anyway.

you swap in the motor and KEEP YOUR RECIEPTS!

you might have to fight with them some, but fact is, its bolted in there, therefore its insured.

look around and you will find several people who had the insurance pay for their cars to be fixed, rather then pay the $12k in mods on top of the cars value...

id also like to note that the only diff between a badass RS vert and a badass Z28/Iroc vert is that i pay less in insurance for the same coverage.

If someone is going to the trouble of doing a 406 TPI or other similarly expensive (and fast) project car, then it really is advisable to get an "Agreed Value" policy from their insurer. So they have a guaranteed pay-out if the car is stolen or goes on fire or something.

you cant say that about those back roads because my senior year at high school a me and a friend went to a back road somewhere in union county and we raced down the road it was about 3 in the afternoon and apparently there is a pig that lives on the road because when were were leaving he runs out of the bushes with his badge (i was doing about 40 mph and my friend was right behind me) i did not know what was goin on so i sped up and went around him my friend, apparently not as good as a driver actually hit the guy and got arrested and charged (he cliped him with the corner ofthe driver side fender) and he had slowed down to about 20 when he hit him

disclaimer
none of this actually happened to me I SWEAR!!!!! this is a story that i heard :lala:

backroads

i have been all over jersey looking for races back in the day. it used to be easy but now that the whole underground streetracing has been topic #1 on the police hit list i hold myself for raceway park, or go to philly on saturday nights. jersey is one of the worst places to get caught racing or speeding due to double fines and anyone caught racing is imidiate loss of license. now they way i look at it is $20 to go to the track or $*** knows how much in insurence and fines.
