Need To Pick A Cam
Need To Pick A Cam
i got my block back from the machine shop and all is good. bored .30 over, line bored. magnafluxed, bearings installed, ive decided on (of course) vortec heads prepd for the stiffer springs, and an edelbrock performer rpm air gap intake. all this is going into my carbed 383. i need suggestions on a good cam to match up to my heads and intake so i can price them and have everything ready for tax time. i also plan on a 150 shot someday if that makes a difference

What valve springs can you run? Hyd roller or flat tappet? I wouldnt put too much faith in Comp's cam recommendations. Past experience with their recommendations has flat out sucked. They recommended the Magnum 280 for my Vortec headed 350. Anybody who knows anything about current small block chevy equipment knows that the exhaust flow on a stock vortec head flat out sucks (why do you think GM started putting a back cut on the exhaust valves on current vortec heads).
If you want a good cam recommendation, go to www.cammotion.com and fill out a sheet, and they will get you going.
If you want my recommendation, I would go with the Comp Extreme Energy 284 camshaft. Its dual pattern so it will clear the exhaust side better than a single pattern cam, and it is ground on a 110 lobe separation so it will still be efficient to use in a nitrous application like you are planning on.
My friend ran a 383 with the XE284, a set of pocket ported edelbrock performer rpm heads and 10.5:1 compression in an s10 and went 11.8's.

It kind of depends on what kind of driving will be done and what rpm range you want for the motor. Whether Crane is better than Comp, or the other way around, it's pretty much a toss-up. They're both equal, it's pretty much a personal choice really. I perfer Comp though, I like their grinds a bit better than Crane. Lots of people have had success with the Vortec heads, Performer RPM and XE274 combo. Many are running low 12's on that setup. If you get reccomendations from a cam company they are most likely going to be fairly conservative so keep that in mind as well.
