305 to 385
well i've pulled my car out of storage and i think i'm ready to get to work. What i want to do is yank out its stock 305 (which was fresh rebuilt when i bought it, unfortunatly) and replace it with a 385. i've got about 3 grand (canadian) to work with. what'd be the most efficent (cost) way to sink it in there. i wouldnt mind starting with one from the wreckers and building it up from there, but i'm not all that sure with what i'd need to look for to make it fit in this car. see, i've never built an engine before, so i guess what i'm asking is what would you purchase if you were going to start a project like this in terms of starting engine, upgrades after teardown and do i need a bigger fuel pump or things like that. i plan on doing a lot of reading before starting and i work in a shop, (not a mechanic shop), so tools aren't any big deal.

SCAT 9000 Cast Crank (either 1 piece rms or 2 depending on the 350 block you obtain)
A set of good I-beam rods like the GM PM rods or Scat or Eagle
A set of Hypereutectic pistons, or possibly some forged Speed Pro pistons if budget will allow (shoot for 10:1, no less).
Here is where you have to decide whether this will be a daily driver or a street/strip car:
If this car is more of a toy, I would do the following:
Pro Action 200cc Pro Lightning Iron heads assembled for hydraulic cam from www.proshaver.com ($760)
Comp Cams Extreme Energy 284 Camshaft or a similar spec solid camshaft if you can keep up with maintenence.
Top it off with a victor jr. and a Speed Demon 750 mechanical secondary carb and go have fun
.Remember, I have left out a lot of things. You will need headers, fuel delivery modifications, valve train (lifters, rocker arms, push rods) and so fourth, but I dont really know what you already have.
This would be a street/strip type build up. For street, I would go with a set of vortec heads and the XE274 camshaft.

3 grand can, I find it hard to accomplish aspecially
with aftermarket parts..
Id get a cast crank, get a 4 bolt block from a wrecked yukon
or such.. reuse as many parts depending on the output
level u want to accomplish..
Its like what ? 2 grand US ? tho if u do all the machine work..
and install .. its by far easier.
U still have to update the trans.. rear.. suspension maybe..
sticky tires... brakes..
Money goes fast when u add it all up.
