gm fastburn 385??

Ive been loking into crate engines for a while. I think that the fastburn "385" (actually a 350) from GM would be the best bet. Im not experianced with engines so a build up of m own would be out of the question. I plan to work on my little 305 after i pull it out of the maro to actually get some real experiance. Any one here bought one of these? My other option was going to be the zz4 but im leaning toward the fastburn with the hotcam option. Also, what size carb would ya think would best suit the fastburn? Im going to ditch the tbi setup when the new engine goes in.thanks fellas

Both engines are great. Dont forget that for stoplight to stoplight driving torque rules, and thats where the zz4 shines. With either engine you wont want more than a 650 carb on top.

If you are leaning toward the Fast Burn 385 with the HOT cam (and, I assume, the 1.6 rockers that go with it) you have a ZZ430. BTW, Chevrolet has a HOT cam/1.6 rocker package. That's a heck of an engine. I'd go with the carb that Chev put on the ZZ430 (I'd tell you what it is but I don't remember. If you need to know, respond and I'll check one of my old GM Performance parts catalogs).

yeah i would like to know more about that zz430... ive never heard of it before. was that an older crate engine? The guys at GM parts dierect told me that if i got the hotcam i would have to install it myself. Also w/ hotcam its rated at about 430 hp, what about trq? im guessin over 400, but its just a guess

Its called the fastburn 385 because of its advertised power output and not displacment. For the same reason why the hotcam upgrade is called the fastburn 430 or ditto for the ZZ430. I belive Scoggin Dickey sells both upgrades already installed if you are leary of doing it yourself.

i checked sdpc and it says the zz430 is no longer available. i would really rather have the hot cam option come from the factory. Ive never messed with engine internals and wouldnt want to start to with a new engine i paid big bucks for. Can anyone else find where it comes factory?

Don't bother looking for a factory ZZ430. GM made 430 of them, charged an outrageous price (around $12,000 IIRC) and sold every last one of them. I think the darn things just flew out of the factory because people were snapping them up.

I think Shifty's right, Scoggin-Dickey does build a knock-off.

The part number for the ZZ430 (which will do you absolutely no good) was 12496430. You could piece one together yourself, although it is going to be real expensive, or talk to Scoggin-Dickey. Try sdpc2000.com, first.

The carb (I assume that's the part number you need) is a 750 cfm Holley vacuum secondary carb with an electric choke, p/n 12485506, mounted on a dual plane intake, p/n 12366573.

Okay, if you still need some part numbers, reply and I'll get them for you.

wow thats reall helpful Parrydise7 , thanks a bunch for the p/n's. I think ill be cool with the rest now. I am definatley going with the fastburn385 witht the hotcam option. youre pretty sure thats the best carb for the job? I was looking at holleys, i hate edlebrock..grr ( cause of my buddies ghetto camaro ) and barry grant is to much $$$ for not much better. But as for holley, thats what im looking for? i for sure dont want manual choke.

If the factory is using that Holley carb, it's a pretty good bet it works well with that combination.

I guess you could also get one of the SD base plates and run a Super Ram.
