My buddy is giveing me a running 350 and a turbo 400 trany out of a 71 Le Mans. Is it possible to get that thing to pass the smog test for my 91 3.1 and if so how.

I'm pretty sure it's "illegal" (at least in states that do smog testing) to swap an older motor into a newer car.

Maybe, if you can lean the hell out of it, & slip the attendent a $100, maybe.......

or just wait until after it's tested
if they do a visual test, then you're SOL

It's a Pontiac motor, not a Chevrolet. Absolutely nothing whatsoever about a Pontiac motor will interchange with a Chevrolet, except for a couple of internal distributor parts and maybe the spark plugs and maybe a couple of bolts. The exhaust, motor mounts, and lots of other things are completely different. You will spend more just trying to jam that thing in there even if you got it for free, than you will buying a whole Chevy 350 motor and trans and doing a smooth easy install.

Besides, it's a 350. A Pontiac 350 is to a Pontiac 400 as a Chevrolet 305 is to a Chevrolet 350; same stroke, tiny bore. It's a poor choice for a swap.

If you just really want a Pontiac motor for some reason and you don't care whether you end up with the best possible result as far as it being fast, you just want a Pontiac motor, then it might be worthwhile. If you're looking for best bang for the buck, that isn't it.
