I think the LT4 was the most powerful version of the small block Chevy ever produced. The LS1 is another type of block. The LT4 was basically an LT1 with better flowing heads and intake. The cam was a little more aggresive I think too. It was rated at 330 HP. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.

With the different heads came bigger (soduim filled) valves, different rockers, etc. The engine also had a higher redline than the LT1.

The LT4 also used a 4 bolt main block while the LT1's have a 2 bolt. I would settle for any of them two, to put under the hood of my black/gold 1985 Iroc-Z.
The LT4 that came in the Grand Sport Vette's and the few F-Bodies that got them were rated at 330 hp. The Hotcammed LT4 is supposed to put out 425 hp but a more realistic number is 400. Good luck finding a factory LT4. You can get the kit from a number of places but most people agree you can do better for the money.

The lT4 was created because GM wanted more power out of what they had while the LS1 stuff finished up for the new vette. They wanted the C4 to go out with a bang. Here are a few links that go into some detail on the differences.
