cam help

My 305 was rebuilt not long ago. How hard is it to install a cam. I already have averything off the front the engine. Do I have to install new lifters or springs. I dont want a real big cam, just some more power. Maybe something around the h.o. 305 but i dont know. Please help Thanks Oh ya, i already have intake, carb, and headers.

What year 305 do you have, and is it carb, TBI or TPI? That will help pick what cam is best for you. Once everything is off the front of the motor the cam goes in with ease. You really should replace the timing chain and springs with any cam swap. You can re-use your lifters and pushrods though.

How hard are springs to intall. Do I need any special tools the cam or springs? Any good sites or books I could read to help do this swap.

Well you have a non roller motor so you can select from a whole slew of non roller cams. Changing valve springs is super easy. With the cam out of the car all of the valves will be closed. Run some air into each cylinder to keep the valves from dropping into the head. Get a valve spring compressor and compress the srping. With a magnet take the retainers off the top and it will come right off. Install is reverse. That is just a quick idea. There should be books at your library on how to build and or repair engines. You could also find a tech guide on the net as well.

I forgot to ask. Do you know what heads are on the motor. If they are stock keep the max lift down under .480"
